Summer Happenings
What a summer it has been! I hope each of you continue to find time to relax, recharge, and reconnect with the things and people you love. As your proud principal, I am thrilled to share that this summer has been one of the most productive and inspiring yet—not just for Marshall Magnet Elementary, but across our entire Flagstaff Unified School District. While many student and teachers were away, our schools were buzzing with purpose, progress, and possibility!  From powerful curriculum guide planning sessions and transformative summer programs to major leaps forward on our new school building, every moment has been used to strengthen our mission and reimagine what’s possible for our Mustang learners. The momentum we’ve built together is undeniable, and it’s setting the stage for one of our best years yet. North West lot has been refinished and the entry and traffic flow had to be switch or the City of Flagstaff would not allow our permit for new build.  Backwards design to bring new opportunity :) 

South West lot will be returned to Marshall on July 23!  This is a really hard push and may change.

  • Monday, July 21 at FHS for Elementary Teachers
  • Tuesday, July 22 Marshall teacher collaboration day on site

Dear Teachers,
The Teaching and Learning Department invites you to join us as early adopters in a paid curriculum guide collaboration this summer. We are hosting two work sessions to support the launch and development of our new curriculum guides:
  • Elementary Teachers: Monday, July 21
  • Secondary Teachers: Tuesday, July 22
  • Time: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Location: Flagstaff High School Commons
  • Pay: $40/hour
These full-day work sessions will be facilitated by district leadership and will focus on:
  • Adding pacing guides to the curriculum
  • Identifying and integrating key curricular resources
  • Beginning lesson planning from the guides
Teachers also have the opportunity to collaborate with their school sites or cross district teams on July 21 (secondary teachers) and July 22 (elementary teachers) at the same rate.
Our main goal is to clarify the first unit of study in each guide and begin building a shared resource library to support instruction throughout the school year.
Additionally, Dr. Jaime Festa-Daigle and Mike Vogler will share the plan for formally introducing the curriculum guides to all staff during the Welcome Back Day on July 30.

New Curriculum Guide Development 

On the first week on June, we wrapped up four days of hard work developing the initial drafts of the Curriculum Guides portion of the FUSD Instructional Playbook! We ended up with 186 teachers, teacher leaders, and administrators collaborating on over 45 subject and grade-level curriculum guides over the 30 hours we were together!  Teachers came away feeling empowered and good about the direction the district is taking with the work they started.

While this was a great start, this work is not complete. It will continue into this school year and beyond. Please stay tuned for information from Dr. Jaime Festa-Daigle and the Curriculum and Instruction (Teaching and Learning) Department regarding the rollout and continuation of this work with the teachers who were unable to attend this week.

On July 1st, our new absence management system, Red Rover, went live. You are welcome to watch the quick "how to" video to understand how to use the system. School Supplies

Erin worked tirelessly to order all of the requested supplies between your grade level lists. It is SO MUCH WORK on Erin ALL summer!  Please take a moment to thank her! 

Erin needs time to sort it all. Please do not just to pick up your supplies. Erin will schedule a time with your grade level to pick up your requested supplies to avoid any confusion.  

Please tell parents that we were able to acquire all supplies with the generous support of our Marshall Community Support Organiztion.  We spent $40/student to have ALL YOU REQUESTED.  We will be asking families for a $40 donation to try to offset this cost to maintain this service to our teachers, students and families.  If they ask, check to be written to Marshall CSO.  Cash also accepted at front office. A QR code will be provided to you upon your return!

U.S. Flag Display

  • A United States flag shall be displayed in each classroom and on or near the outside of the school building during school hours.  Classrooms are defined as any room students may occupy when the Pledge of Allegiance is recited at the beginning of the school day.  It is recommended that U.S. flags also be displayed in common areas (gym, library, auditorium, etc.)
  • The flags must be manufactured in the United States, be at least 2x3 feet, and use appropriate hardware.
  • Other flags should be approximately equal size or smaller than the U.S. flag.
  • No other flag or pennant should be placed above, or if on the same level, to the right of the U.S. Flag (the flag's own right).  When flying two flags on the same staff, the U.S. flag should always be on top. 
  • A specific time is set aside each day for students who wish to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
Q&A Further guidance regarding U.S. Flag Placement:

Is it appropriate for other flags to be larger than the American flag?
Based on requirements regarding other flags being displayed concurrently with the U.S. flag, best practice is that other flags should be of approximately equal size or smaller than the U.S. flag.

If more than one flag is on display, is flag placement expected to be followed as when flags are on display at public gatherings?
Title 4 USC 7 (federal guidance) outlines position requirements of the display of flags.  Generally, no flag should be above, or if on the same level, or to the immediate right of the U.S. flag (the flag's own right).  When flying two flags on the same staff, the American flag should always be on top.  

U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights - did you know? 
  • For grades 7-12, a legible copy of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights shall be placed adjacent to (next to) each classroom flag.
Period of Silence
  • A period of silence shall be observed at the beginning of each day that lasts for at least one minute, but not more than two minutes.  Teachers are required to encourage parents to speak with their children about how to use this time, but teachers may not make their own suggestions for how students use the period of silence.  To comply with the law, teachers may use the language below to instruct students and parents on the moment of silence at the beginning of each school year.
    
Declaration of Independence
  • Each student in grades 4-6 shall recite the following passage from the Declaration of Independence at the commencement of the first class of the school day:  
    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
