Kickoff to the 2024-25 school year! The year of passing off the torch!

The Olympic flame symbolizes the light of spirit, knowledge and life. By passing the flame from one person to another in stages, the Torch Relay expresses the handing down of this symbolic fire from generation to generation.  We have a huge responsibility this school year!  We have an entire year to create powerful and symbolic events and activities to celebrate Marshall's 72 year legacy while looking forward to the bright future ahead!  We are TEAM MARSHALL!   WE get to participate in this historic year!  I can't wait to join you in the games ahead.  Our staff and our students deserve the gold medal professionalism they will get from each one of us!

Together, we are setting ourselves up for a successful 2024-25 school year!

Hello Mustangs!  I hope this blog finds you rested, refreshed and ready for a new school year! It is my honor to extend a warm welcome to the Marshall TEAM!  Last year, we witnessed remarkable teamwork and dedication from each member, and we are confident that this year will be even more remarkable. Together, we have the power to accomplish great things and make a positive impact within our community.

The 2024-25 school year promises exciting new opportunities (math and science curricula), challenges (define, align and refine our systems), and growth (student success at the center of all we do). As part of the Mustang team, you will play a crucial role in shaping a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and excellence.

I encourage you to bring your unique skills, ideas, and passion to the table. Whether you're an experienced team member or joining us for the first time, your contribution will be valued and appreciated.

As we embark on this journey together, we want you to know that we are here to support you every step of the way. Our collective efforts will pave the way for unforgettable experiences and achievements that we can all be proud of.

      8:30 AM - Marshall welcome back breakfast by CORE in the library and a brief welcome               back meeting (introductions of new staff and review plan for the days ahead).
      Rest of the day - Classroom set up

Friday, Aug 2
     8:00 AM - All Elementary at SMS District PD lead by Huffman and Vogler
      12:30 PM - All Elementary at High Country Conf. Center with Dan Mulligan
        *All paraprofessionals are at SMS from 8:00am-3:30pm. See Michele Moore email. The rest of the classified staff starts as day 1 at Marshall. 

Monday, Aug 5
      8:00-10:00 AM Marshall at District Welcome Back @ FHS Wear Marshall Swag!
      10:30 AM-12:30 PM Mandatory Training Modules in Canvas (Please note: this must be completed within the first 10 days of school.  It can be done during this time or on your own time.
      12:30-3:30 PM Classroom set up
       3:30-4:00 PM Groundbreaking ceremony for Marshall 2.0 across the street (voluntary- all families and district representatives are invited).
       4:00-5:30 PM Welcome Back BBQ and Open House for all families (we will not have another Open House in Sept. This is the only one).  This plan assists all of our families in coming  time if they have multiple students at various grade levels.  I expect a big turnout. 

Tuesday, Aug 6
     8:30-11:00 AM Marshall Welcome Back meeting in the Library with ALL Staff
     11:30-4:00 PM Classroom set up AND collaboration meetings for schedule 
     communication and Exceptional Student Service review (team schedule TBD). 

Wednesday, Aug 7 
    ~First Day of School
    ~ National Purple Heart Day!  We are a Purple Heart school so we will have the truck and red carpet. First day with students. 

Please note the following: 
~ Teachers are to have 7.5 hrs for classroom set up.  I have scheduled over this amount. 
~ Deep cleaning has been completed in all rooms.  Tile floors are being cleaned now. 
~ Room keys are available for pick up in the front office at anytime. 
~ Kinder releases early 12:35PM Wed-Friday. Kinder bus routes begin Thursday, Aug. 8. 
~ We will NOT have specials on the first week.  Instead, special area teachers will be assisting different grade level teams.

Monday's Welcome Back Agenda at FHS 

I have THE BEST news ever!!!  

I actually shed a tear of this one! I am pleased to inform you that Marshall Magnet Elementary School will be implementing the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), a program available to schools participating in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Programs.

What does this mean for you and your students attending Marshall Magnet Elementary School?

Great news! All enrolled students at Marshall Magnet Elementary School are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no cost to your household each day of the school year. Your students will be able to participate in these meal programs without having to pay a fee or submit a meal application.

However, if students have a negative balance from previous years, families are responsible for paying that balance. We have over $17,000.00 to collect.  I am so excited about this opportunity.  We will discuss what this will look like at Marshall when we gather all together! 



Supplies

Erin worked tirelessly to order and sort all of the requested supplies between your grade level lists and that last minute art consumable grant.  It was SO MUCH WORK on Erin ALL summer!  Please take a moment to thank her! 

Please do not just go to the cafegymatorium to pick up your supplies. Erin will schedule a time with your grade level to pick up your requested supplies to avoid any confusion.  She is hopeful to schedule you on Thursday, August 1.  

Please tell parents that we were able to acquire all supplies with the generous support of our Marshall Community Support Organiztion.  We spent $40/student to have ALL YOU REQUESTED.  We will be asking families for a $40 donation to try to offset this cost to maintain this service to our teachers, students and families.  If they ask, check to be written to Marshall CSO.  Cash also accepted at front office. A QR code will be provided to you upon your return! 


BEFORE the Monday BBQ,  your classroom must be in compliance with the information below.

U.S. Flag Display

  • A United States flag shall be displayed in each classroom and on or near the outside of the school building during school hours.  Classrooms are defined as any room students may occupy when the Pledge of Allegiance is recited at the beginning of the school day.  It is recommended that U.S. flags also be displayed in common areas (gym, library, auditorium, etc.)
  • The flags must be manufactured in the United States, be at least 2x3 feet, and use appropriate hardware.
  • Other flags should be approximately equal size or smaller than the U.S. flag.
  • No other flag or pennant should be placed above, or if on the same level, to the right of the U.S. Flag (the flag's own right).  When flying two flags on the same staff, the U.S. flag should always be on top. 
  • A specific time is set aside each day for students who wish to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Q&A Further guidance regarding U.S. Flag Placement:

Is it appropriate for other flags to be larger than the American flag?
Based on requirements regarding other flags being displayed concurrently with the U.S. flag, best practice is that other flags should be of approximately equal size or smaller than the U.S. flag.

If more than one flag is on display, is flag placement expected to be followed as when flags are on display at public gatherings?
Title 4 USC 7 (federal guidance) outlines position requirements of the display of flags.  Generally, no flag should be above, or if on the same level, or to the immediate right of the U.S. flag (the flag's own right).  When flying two flags on the same staff, the American flag should always be on top.  

U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights - did you know? 
  • For grades 7-12, a legible copy of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights shall be placed adjacent to (next to) each classroom flag.
Period of Silence
  • A period of silence shall be observed at the beginning of each day that lasts for at least one minute, but not more than two minutes.  Teachers are required to encourage parents to speak with their children about how to use this time, but teachers may not make their own suggestions for how students use the period of silence.  To comply with the law, teachers may use the language below to instruct students and parents on the moment of silence at the beginning of each school year.
    
Declaration of Independence
  • Each student in grades 4-6 shall recite the following passage from the Declaration of Independence at the commencement of the first class of the school day:  
    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

Please review the information below on our new communication system. This was sent to you in an email. The information is critical to how we will communicate with our families this year. You will be expected to use this system.

The Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) is thrilled to introduce ParentSquare as its new communication platform for the upcoming school year. ParentSquare offers a comprehensive solution designed to enhance communication among staff, teachers, administrators, and families, fostering increased engagement and collaboration. FUSD is transitioning from Blackboard/Finalsite to ParentSquare to better serve our community's needs and will discontinue using Blackboard/Finalsite for mass communications after the transition is complete.


Beginning mid-July, families and staff will seamlessly transition to ParentSquare, with teachers benefiting from preloaded class lists to ensure a smooth start to the school year. Beginning this school year, teachers should utilize ParentSquare as their primary form of communication with families. Teachers can not use unregulated forms of communication such as Class Dojo, Remind, or personal cell phones to communicate with families.

Communication to Families
Parents and guardians will receive an activation email for their ParentSquare account. Those who do not register will still receive text, email, and phone notifications. Parents/guardians who create an account can interact by viewing photos, downloading attachments, leaving comments, messaging teachers, signing permission slips, and managing their communication settings and preferences.


Logging Into ParentSquare
Staff members can log into ParentSquare here. Select ‘Sign In with Microsoft’ and log in with your Single Sign-On credentials. Upon logging in for the first time, you will need to verify your email address and phone number.

NOTE: Not all staff members have access to send out communications via ParentSquare, but all staff members will be able to sign in and view the posts and alerts from their site. Notifications of posts and alerts will also be delivered to staff members via email, text message, or phone call.


ParentSquare Training Resources
Administrators, teachers, coaches, and other staff that will be sending out messages via ParentSquare can access training modules, instructions, webinars, and more here (must be signed in to access).


We strongly encourage staff members to review these resources before sending out any messages. Additional communication will be provided directly to these individuals when their school, class, or sport lists are loaded and ready for use.

For technical support with ParentSquare, staff members can submit a ticket via FMX here or call the Technology Help Desk at (928) 527-6300.


2024 APS Supply My Class details with you to help us get the word out to your amazing teachers. This program randomly selects 500 teachers to win $500 to purchase school supplies necessary to support their classrooms. The APS Supply My Class application is currently open until August 11th  at http://www.Aps.com/SupplyMyClass.


Staffing


We have more new staff this year than all 6 previous years combined!  Wow! We are thrilled to have so many familiar faces in new positions and some new faces in positions! Hiring over the summer was all consuming and never ending.  I am thrilled with the new Mustangs we have hired and we still have room for a few more team members so please spread the word!
