Calling Off in AESOP/Frontline

This was last Thursday, Sept 26, 2024
I am always so inspired by the way so many of you step up to assist when we have teachers and support staff out with no substitute coverage.  I know you cannot complete your job responsibilities when you are fulfilling those of another.  It is very difficult as we piece together coverage and divide and conquer as much as we can to be sure that students are safe and learning continues.  I reached out to the district for support three times last week.  Sadly, they were not able to send any one to us.  I see you and I thank you for stepping up for colleagues!

To help manage unforeseen absences, please keep these steps in mind:

  • - As soon as you feel unwell or think you might need to take a day off, please enter your absence in Frontline as early as possible. The sooner we request a sub, the better chance we have of getting someone to cover.

  • - In the admin notes on Frontline, you can include relevant details—only I can see these.

  • - If you have a duty on the day you are absent, please find another staff member to request coverage for your duties.  We cannot count on the substitutes to know about duties.

  • - For digital sub plans or any details about your absence that need to be shared, send them to myself, Kristin Hulls, Erin Macdonald, Christina Janeway and a grade-level team memeber).

  • - If your situation requires more immediate attention beyond an email, please contact the front office.

If the lack of substitute coverage affects your prep time (jeopardizing the required number of minutes per week) or if you need to cover a duty over lunch, please be sure to fill out a timecard. I understand the burden this can place on your day, and I am committed to working with you to manage these challenges as best as we can. It's important that we all feel confident our students are in good hands when we’re away, knowing that we might need to step in to support each other in return. I trust no one on our team would want to place an undue burden on their colleagues. We are in this together!

Please actively call subs to see their availability when you are out!

A few subs we continue to get at Marshall:

Elysia Goff (928) 451-4521

Sheila Griffis (928) 380-6652

Judy DeClerck (928) 417-8133

Evelyn Ramirez (928) 310-2612

Angela Fatica (602) 980-8437

Susan Crouse (928) 310-4627

Parent/Teacher Conferences

12:45pm Early Release

Please remember to provide us with your

conference schedule at the front office so we are ready for our families.  Once again, I will be reporting your conference percentages to Mr. Penca using this form.  It is always preferred to have in-person conferences but teams can be another option.  As a last resort, phone calls will also count but please try all other options first. You guys always rock these important opportunities to partner with our families! If you have a conference after 4pm, please meet your families at the front door.  Don't forget, Tuesday is our collective "late night" until 6pm for our families who need it.

Lesson Plans- It is a state, district, and school-wide expectation that staff have lesson plans for instruction. It is not my intention to collect lesson plans throughout the year, but they must be accessible should anyone request them. I will not ask to see your plans unless I have concerns about the content or planning of instruction. Please see me if you have questions on this. Thank you.

FUSD Foundation Updates

They are accepting applications for the FUSD Foundation Micro Grant Program. Up to $500 for projects within the classroom! The board will review these applications once a month and will be giving out $6,000 this semester. You can access the application HERE

Election - Need to Know

As the November 2024 Election approaches, it is important that each member of Team FUSD understand what you can and cannot do as an employee of a school district. The following guidelines will be included in the upcoming edition of The Peak employee newsletter: FUSD Election Guidelines 2024. Please be mindful of conversations in hallways and other common spaces.

Staff Halloween Costume!

Several teachers have discussed they would like to encourage all who are interested to participate in a group Halloween costume this year! Please see the survey below to vote on which group costume you think would be the best for our staff. The results will be announced with plenty of time to purchase/make a costume before Halloween! Some are more expensive than others so please keep that in mind. Most can be hand-made. Vote using this FORM.

Halloween
...is on a Thursday, I will take Friday off.  I joke, but I want that to be true.  I don't have a problem with Halloween at all!  It's the day after that always seems to present great challenges.  We will be ready for them! Please check out the "Halloween 3-Pronged Policy"  below.  No surprises here, just common sense.

Marshall's 3-Pronged Policy -----E   (get it?)
1.  Any Halloween activities must be aligned with standards and instruction.

2.  Aligned Halloween activities must not impact or interrupt other school programs, schedules, or special classes, including but not limited to RTI.

3.  Costumes must be school appropriate following the guidelines below.  If your students wish to come in costume, please make sure you pass along and monitor these guidelines.

  • If costumes are in any way unsafe students will be required to remove them.
    • No attire may be worn which would in any way impede the student from moving safely and quickly out of the building in the event of an alarm.
    • If students must change, they will be sent to the nurse's office or  they will be required to stay in the office until parents arrive with a change of clothes.
  • Costumes must not obstruct vision or movement or in any way present a hazard to the student or other classmates.
    • Masks may not be worn.  Not even outside the classroom.
  • No fake knives, swords, or guns of any kind may be used as a part of any costume.
    • Such items will be confiscated and may result in disciplinary action including but not limited to suspension from school.
  • Costumes must not be overly gruesome and overtly violent.
Also, please keep in mind: many of our constituents find the celebration of Halloween to be offensive, contrary to their religious beliefs, or just a distraction from what should otherwise be a normal, productive day of school.  In planning to incorporate Halloween into your teaching next week, should you choose to do so, please recognize and honor each individual's position on this issue and their right to hold it.  You may not choose to exclude from instruction students who choose not to recognize Halloween.  Please keep in mind: a separate-but-equal instructional program for such students is most often neither.

Thank you for you help in enforcing the "Halloween 3-Pronged Policy".  Please share your educational ideas and photos with the rest of us.

Capital Monies

Capital One-Time Funding

We've received just under $24,000.00 of one time funding to purchase capital items for Marshall.  This is a HUGE deal (to put it in perspective, our typical annual budget for capital expenses is $3000 annually).

As mentioned in our Site PD, I would like to gather feedback from you, the Marshall Staff, on what we should spend this money on. It is particularly difficult knowing we will be moving in one year from NOW into a new school with all new furnishing, tech, etc. Please reflect on this individually, talk with your team (grade level, specialty area, etc) and then provide me with feedback by October 18th using this FORM.

Marshall 2.0  Furniture, Fixtures, & Equipment Kick-Off Meeting (FF&E)

Marshall 2.0. FF&E Minutes with detail for those who wish to stay in the loop.

Dear Janelle and Marshall Staff,

First of all, thank you for coming to our Kick-off Engagement meeting on Monday. We truly appreciate your input and giving us guidance on the future furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) for your new school. Attached are the meeting minutes from our session. Please review it and let me know if you have any changes that need to be made.

As we begin the first step in the Design Process, I have outlined the following steps to proceed with:

  1. Start to design the furniture layouts using Killip as a basis of design, along with the notes that we heard from your session (see meeting minutes).
  2. Within the next month, we will begin to schedule a few 30-minute to an hour meeting with your teacher champions next couple of weeks to review the furniture layouts. A majority of the virtual meetings will be conducted after school (after 3:45pm) or on Fridays (1:30pm – 4pm) since these are the times that are more convenient for you and your team. We will start in the following order:

·       Pre-K & Kinder

·       1st, 2nd & 3rd

·       4th, 5th & Special Education

·       Makerspaces & Specials (Art & Music)

·       Admin & Teacher Lounge/Workroom

·       Classroom Support Services & Nurse

·       Media Center & Other Support Spaces (Janitor)

  1. After we meet with you and your Teacher Champions, we will take those changes, update the layouts, and conduct another meeting to make sure we have all the items accounted for.
  2. Towards the end of our Design Process, we will then select finishes and fabrics and finish out the Design Process.

We will work with you every step of the way to ensure that you are happy and satisfied with your selections before we begin the Procurement Process. At that time, we will coordinate another set of meetings to continue working together.

Again, thank-you for meeting with us. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and don’t forget to review the attached meeting minutes. Have a great day.

Sincerely,

LaDawn Bentley

If the printer jams on someone's papers, please unjam it or find help/call the office for help to unjam it before leaving it for the next person. Almost everyday, an early bird has been coming in and having to unjam one or both copiers.
"I find a bunch of queued papers for print, so people send things jam it or see that it's jammed and just leave it. It has been frustrating having to start each day unjamming the printer".  Let's work together!
