Fire Marshal begins school visits in February. A few items to consider as you look around your area:
- Broken ceiling tiles. If you have broken tiles in your classroom's ceiling, please let Erin or Christina know so we can create a work order to get them fixed.
- Inside of classroom doors. You may have a few things affixed to the outside of your classroom door, but you must have NOTHING taped to or affixed to the door on the inside of the door. I don't know why.
- Extension cords. If a device is not plugged directly into a wall outlet it must otherwise ONLY be plugged into a working surge-protected power strip. NO EXTENSION CORDS may be used anywhere within the school building.
- Fabric drapes and curtains. Any/all fabric covering your walls, windows, shelves must have proof of fire-proofedness attached (or in your possession) or be treated with fire-retardant spray. Tule-type netting cannot be treated with spray and must be removed IMMEDIATELY
- Stringed Lights. Must have "original date of installation" taped on the cord. All lights can only be up for 90 days unless they are the LED ones I have in my office.
- Artwork. Is artwork and other decorations on walls limited to 10% of the specific wall it is attached to? This seems to be important in the hallways. No paper below the top border.
- Hallways. Halls must be free from obstructions.
- Evacuation maps. Your map should be affixed to the left or right of your door at eye level. You must indicate on your map your classroom's location ("You are here") and highlight your particular exit route. You can print a map off of THE HUB

DINÉ Professional Development
There is a brief video story produced by NAU-TV about the DINÉ professional development opportunity. Teachers must apply by February 17; more information about how to apply can be found online at https://nau.edu/dineinstitute
Here is the link to the video: https://youtu.be/cwuYVKcd4sc
Did you know that Ms. Arnold and Mrs. Joe are the only two FUSD employees who have been a part of this? Ask them all about it!

"The photo of the students standing in front of the large yellow radioactive waste sign in the video is my class on a field trip this year. Not only did I learn an incredible amount through the program, but the students opened their hearts to the curriculum as did the parents that participated with us." ~ Judith Arnold
"The DINE institute program helped me reach a level of explaining the why before I teach a curriculum unit. The importance of understanding real issues that drive curriculum. The program was diverse covering cultural arts, sciences and math concepts. The unit I developed was about the heart and lungs, my students encouraged me to make more lessons like the one I designed which had many STEAM concepts." ~ Lisa Joe
~Thank you Kinder Team, Nurse Liz, Erin, Christina, Peggy, Ms. C, Ms. Hartsock and PTO for your professionalism during Kindergarten registration. You crushed it!

DISMISSAL
Please remember, NO treats or snacks at dismissal. Teachers, please don't send kiddos out of your classroom with uneaten treats. They cannot take food items on the bus and cannot be eating them in the gym at dismissal.
Thank you.
ELL ELEMENT
Strategy #4 ~"HONOR THE “SILENT PERIOD.” Many new language learners go through a silent period, during which they will speak very little, if at all. “Don’t force them to talk if they don’t want to,” says Eddington, “A lot of students who come from cultures outside of America want to be perfect when they speak, so they will not share until they feel they are at a point where they’re perfect.” Just knowing that this is a normal stage in second language acquisition should help relieve any pressure you feel to move them toward talking too quickly.
