Reminder of FUSD Travel Expectations

District Expectation:

With substantial spread of COVID-19 staff and students should avoid travel when possible, especially on public transportation (e.g. airplanes, trains, busses, etc.)

Staff/Students should follow CDC Guidelines and think critically about travel prior to leaving. Don’t travel if you are sick or if you have been around someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days. Don’t travel with someone who is sick.

Site Implementation:

While Traveling:

  • Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arm lengths) from anyone who did not travel with you, particularly in crowded areas. It’s important to do this everywhere — both indoors and outdoors.

  • Wear a mask to keep your nose and mouth covered when you are in shared spaces outside of your home, including when using public transportation.

  • Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

  • Watch your health: Look for symptoms of COVID-19, and take your temperature if you feel sick.

Upon your return to Flagstaff:

  • Avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether you get tested or not.

  • If there are people in the household who did not travel with you, wear a mask and ask everyone in the household to wear masks in shared spaces inside your home for 14 days after travel.

  • Self-monitor for 14 days, meaning people should remain alert for any symptoms related to COVID-19.

Restorative Practices

Restorative Practices, sometimes called Restorative Justice, at its heart invites us to engage with students, parents/caregivers, and colleagues in a way that honors the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals so that everyone can thrive and grow to their full potential.  We interact with students in ways that nurtures, guides, and supports. It challenges traditional power dynamics.

With that in mind, these are the Core Values of Restorative Practices/Justice:
  • Respect (re: again; spect: to look):  "To look again" from the point of view of the other; to put one's self in the other's shoes and then respond.
  • Dignity: Worth that cannot be substituted.  People have dignity because the essence of who they are cannot be replaced.
  • Mutual concern: Much more than a common concern, mutual concern is reciprocal, interconnected caring.

Please help us all see what is happening behind the scenes!

~Thank you Nurse Liz, Erin and Christina for ALL your help with the KDAs! -The Kinder Team

~Thank you Mrs. Hartsock for covering my class so that I could meet with a parent! -Mrs. Hanson

RTI Corner

Hi All- (Just a reminder)

Here are some updates from RTI for our big Benchmark Testing Window! Last week before a well deserved break:

  • December 7th- The Synergy REQUIRED math test window opened.  Tests are loaded and ready to go.  Please make sure you have emailed Russ or Amy the date and time you are taking the test.  We recommend doing it sooner rather than later. We will try to make sure we will be available to troubleshoot for you once we know your date and time.

Most of you are done- Woo-Hoo!

  • December 14th-18th Kindergarten- fifth grade continues with AIMSWebPlus testing .

  •  December 14th-17th RTI for everyone except for students in  Hanno, Kasch and Anderson’s groups.

GDMs will take place after winter break and we will set the next round of RTI groups and set goals for students who will be progress monitored.  Those grade levels who have chosen to collect more data with AIMsWebPlus will set the dates when we return.

I think that is all for now.  If we don’t see you before have a great Winter Break!  Here’s to a healthy, safe and happy 2021.

~Amy and Russ

COVID-19 Playbook

Quarantine Timeline Update- The CDC and ADHS are looking to implement new guidelines for shortening quarantine time frame. Per current CCHHS recommendations, FUSD will be sticking with our previous guidelines.

District Covid Testing Program- The Chief Health Administrator and Superintendent have met with local health officials about interest in a COVID-19 testing program for FUSD staff and students and have completed a waiver to administer tests at FUSD sites . These nasal rapid antigen tests provide a response within 15 minutes and are most accurate with individuals exhibiting symptoms. Next steps are to train nurses, establish protocols for secure storage and distribution of tests, and the creation of a permission form for testing students.

Additionally, FUSD was invited to participate in a pilot program in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Health Services, Arizona Department of Education, and Arizona State University along with additional school districts across the state. The supports include weekly saliva-based surveillance testing, communication materials, technical support, and access to online learning resources. COVID-19 tests could initially be used with FUSD staff and students attending onsite Safe Learning Centers, special ed., and athletics and then use expanded when in-person learning resumes.

Flagstaff Saliva Based Testing-

***ASU Saliva based testing at Ft. Tuthill will continue through March***

2020 is almost hindsight!

 2020, A Year to Remember

Hindsight is 20/20: This expression means: "It's easier to analyze and evaluate situations when we're looking back on them in the past, than when we're in the present moment."
It feels like we have all been stuck in the moments of 2020.  Still, I know so many of us want to "put it behind us".  Easier said than done.  Do you take the time to reflect on all you accomplished in a year and then create your New Year's Resolutions (personal or professional) for the next? If so, I would love to hear about them and share out in our final 2020 Mustang Memo. Please share with us HERE.

It challenges traditional power dynamics.

With that in mind, these are the important vocabulary within the context of Restorative Practices/Justice:

  • Justice honors the inherent worth of all.  It is enacted through relationships.  Primary justice, sometimes called social justice, is the condition of respect, dignity, and the protection of rights and opportunities for all, existing in relationships where no one is wronged.  Secondary justice, or judicial justice is understood mainly as a response to harm or crime.
  • Restorative, as an adjective for both primary and secondary justice, describes how an individual's or group's dignity, worth and interconnectedness will be nurtured, protected, or reestablished in ways that will allow people to be fully contributing members of their communities.
  • Education comes from the Latin words educare, meaning "to lead out, to draw out."  Therefore, it includes learning in all contexts, formal and informal, and seeks to empower learners of all ages to live out their capacity for being human and relational.

Managing Breakout Rooms in Zoom
Please click the link above for some tips and tricks.  After much conversation, we have finally been given permission to explore the use of breakout rooms for students without constant supervision.  Expectations and explanations must be made clear to both students and parents as the stories of breakout rooms gone wrong at the elementary level are
numerous.  It is so important that we first create a document with clear expectations on break out zoom room behaviors.  I hope we can get this accomplished sooner than later so we can begin breakout rooms for those teachers who have been requesting permission. Want to help me?  Please let me know.
