I have witnessed some amazing lessons and conversations that honor student identity and culture in many of our classrooms. Thank you for providing a mirror for many of our native american students to look at their own identity and see themselves in many contemporary and impactful native americans in our society. Similarly, thank you for providing a window for other students to see and understand the lived experiences of others. When classrooms serve as both windows and mirrors, they become inclusive across identity domains. This allows students with diverse experiences and identities to feel "both validated by being included and to have the opportunity to humanize others whose background may differ from them, which enhances school climate by allowing all learners to feel seen and represented." (Cohen & Freibert, 2013). I can't wait to learn more from you and your students!
Judith Arnold has been working hard to coordinate Marshall's Native American Heritage Day Event on Thursday, Nov. 18th from 9am - 12pm outside with some distinguished guests out on the field and multiple videos to show your students at your convenience. Details are forthcoming.

I'm thankful for many things about Marshall staff. I'm thankful for the front office staff, who are always willing to help out, whether it's finding the answer to something or helping me get a message to my daughter. I'm thankful for the many teachers Ady has had over time...she has made such substantial gains at Marshall even during the pandemic! I'm thankful for the crossing guards who make sure we are safe in the mornings and each afternoon. I'm thankful for the people preparing lunches...my daughter prefers your cooking to mine, so it saves me time, which I never have enough of :-) I'm thankful for Girls on the Run, which has helped my daughter gain confidence in her running abilities, has helped build friendships, and keeps her in tip top shape. Finally, I'm thankful for Magnet Monday...Ady has been building up a lot of confidence in her disc golf game, and finally feels like she might be able to play against the boys. We just feel so blessed to see our kids grow and learn at Marshall! Oscar is thriving at Sinagua after 6 years of attending Marshall! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. We only have a 3rd grader there now and Hazel loves it! Oh how we wish we could slow time down and really enjoy these last 3 years there with Hazel. We so miss being in the building and seeing the busy bodies in the hallways and classrooms. We can't wait to be able to come inside again! On a daily basis since school returned in-person in March 2021 (and even during online school challenges), we have seen teachers and staff setting aside their own fears, doubt, and personal struggles to genuinely listen, teach, and support our children. In a highly stressful time for staff & educators (risking illness by being around so many, listening to all sides of parents’ views), our appreciation for your patience, kindness, and understanding is even more profound than before the pandemic.
