August 2024 - Define, Align, Refine to Elevate! DARE!

Marshall team,
You have been so patient and very collaborative in getting this year up and running.  You are hungry to define, align and refine our practices and our systems.  We are collectively ready to put in the work to set our entire year and team up for success!  I received a great deal of clarification at Admin council on Monday!  We will meet this Friday from 2-4pm in our Library where we will review our Safety Plans with all staff.  Then, we will collectively define our guiding coalitions, goals, expectations and more!

Behavior GC will analyze your feedback and create our behavior matrix, set goals and meeting times for the year.
Project Momentum/PLC GC will set goals and meeting times for the year.
Family Engagement GC will set goals, meeting times for the year and family engagement event calendar for MCSO review.

Focus on Professional Development

Bite-Sized PD:
If you support a student who has a 504 plan or an Individualized Educational Program (IEP), you need to be aware of what accommodations and modifications mean within the school setting.

An accommodation is a type of support that a student receives which helps them complete the same material as their peers. It is a change in how a student is able to access their learning. Longer testing times, being read tests out loud, and movement breaks are all examples of accommodations.
modification is a change to the actual material that a student is learning or completing. If a second-grade student is still learning how to read and write early sight words, they might be given different materials and tests than their peers who are familiar with more complex words.
A 504 plan ONLY provides accommodations and is related to a health condition, and an IEP typically includes both accommodations and modifications.
504 plans will NOT include outside services (speech, OT, paraprofessionals, etc.).
IEPs can have outside services included.

ParentSquare

Use ParentSquare to communicate weekly information to families. It is also a great way to text and communicate with them back and forth when needed.

Gradebook Descriptor Change

They have changed the 1-4 descriptors in Synergy to the following:

1 – Emerging

2 – Developing

3 – Proficient

4 – Distinguished

The change comes after Dan Mulligan pointed it out at his training. At this point, nothing else is changing. We need to use this language internally as begin talking about our data as well.

  • We have once again secured outside funding (CCESA) for a Social Worker to work with our students two days a week!  Mrs. C. and I are working closely with Everybody Matters to get this program up and running very soon. Our students deserve the best of our services

Don't forget
Digital citizenship education in grades K-12 is required for FUSD to comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and receive E-rate funds.  In addition, current academic standards include digital citizenship as an essential curriculum component.  In order to better prepare our students for life in a digital world and to meet Federal obligations, all FUSD students must receive at least two lessons related to internet safety/digital citizenship during each school year.

FUSD strongly encourages digital citizenship instruction throughout the academic year, as it provides an opportunity to set expectations for online behavior and prepares students for college, career, and life.

The FUSD Digital Citizenship Curriculum was revised and updated in the 2022 school year to include Nearpod lessons that are ready to teach. These lessons are located in the curriculum document on the FUSD website, linked below, as well as in the District Library in Nearpod. In the link below, you will find the two required lessons at each grade level, an additional 2-3 recommended lessons at each grade level, and an online verification form to be completed by each staff member that teaches the curriculum with students.
View the curriculum and the online verification form at: https://www.fusd1.org/internetsafetyAll required lessons should be taught, and the verification form should be completed by the teacher no later than Feb. 7, 2025.

To best support you, the LTI Department would like to host an informational table at your school's family engagement events. They would also like to offer PD for your us on resources available to support Digital Citizenship. Please fill out this form to let LTI know how they can help!

Emergency Sub Plans:

We never know when we could be absent from school, so all staff who have students and can get a sub, you need to create an emergency sub plan folder that includes your class list, classroom procedures, outline of the school day, and lessons that can be taught during the day.

Volunteers:

You are welcome to invite families into your classrooms to volunteer. Families/Volunteers must coordinate their time with you before coming to the school. If you are having volunteers on a particular day, let the office know so that they are aware you are expecting volunteers. Volunteers need to complete a volunteer packet with the district.  If they did this last year, it is good for 5 years!

Decision Ed Data Warehouse

After our Friday PD with Lance, Mike, and Dr. Dan Mulligan, aside from the information on PLCs, there was a general sense that data would be useful for teachers. To that end, the data dashboards on DecisionEd were recently updated:

  • Teachers have access through: https://www.fusd1.org/Page/19872

  • Please note that dashboards are only accessible from FUSD sites. Teachers should only have access to their current year students.

  • New teachers won't have access for a few weeks.

  • Lexiles and Quantiles are available under the AIMSWeb+ tab.
