Falling into the end of October

Optimistic October is difficult to keep up with!  Here are a few reminders for the end of the month! Please pay close attention to your two opportunities to chime in on important projects.  One project is our NEW MERCH concept from Marshall CSO using local, native, artist. The other project is also time sensitive and your chance to have your say in a great project CORE Marketing is doing to commemorate the MOVE.  You can be a part of history!  I hope you take advantage of this.

Marshall engaged 94% of our families for family conferences!  Thank you all for elevating our conference experience! Keep that communication going with Mr. Penca's guidelines below.

Optimistic October is filled with opportunities for teachers to chase some funds for innovative projects and needs.

Opportunity #1 Marshall MERCH
Marshall CSO is seeking feedback NOW from all staff!!! Very time sensitive:
We are working with an amazing local artist, Rod Cooley (https://www.rodcooley.com), to create a custom design for the new Marshall School merch. He provided an awesome initial concept sketch for feedback before making the actual design, please see below. You'll see the new tagline "Built by Community, Powered by Mustangs", the Peaks, Francis Short Pond, a mustang, the new building, and Flagstaff landscaping.

Some thoughts from our MCSO meeting:
  • To make the pond more clearly water vs the ground surrounding it
  • Add "Est. 1952" maybe under "Marshall Magnet Elementary"
  • Consider adding Native American / South Western styling or elements to final design
Our goals in creating new merch are to build excitement and community for Marshall and the new building. To keep the apparel accessible and appealing to kids and adults alike. Also, to keep a visual connection to the colors, mascot, and mission of Marshall.

Would love feedback from the teachers and staff, so we can provide that to the artist and get going on the final design!

Also, it would be great to gather interest on what types of merchandise people would be interested in; zipper sweaters, totes, t-shirts, hoodies, crew neck sweaters, stickers, etc. We want you to love this design and be so proud to wear it as a member of the Marshall community! This is the concept sketch.

Opportunity #2 CORE Legacy Project
We are getting closer and closer to Marshall's ribbon cutting, and the CORE team is putting together something special to capture all the moments, memories, and milestones from this past year. They’d love your help spreading the word!

Typeform below is a quick and fun way for staff, students, families, etc. to send in any photos, quotes, or stories that capture the spirit of this school year. Whether it’s something heartfelt, funny, or just a great memory from the rebuild process.
No need for anything formal. They’re just hoping to collect some authentic snippets that show what makes your school community so special. 🙂

Optimistic October's final week is RED RIBBON week.  Mrs. C. will provide daily statements via video for you to show your students at your convenience.  She will follow it up the following week with lesson in library on healthy choices.  The theme is "Life is a puzzle, solve it drug free." While we don't focus on the drug aspect, we do focus on health, wellness, anti-bullying, and making good choices. Here are the themes for next week.

Optimistic October ends with a reprieve from suffering through the day after Halloween with students!!!

Halloween
Finally on a Friday!!!!  We do not have to endure the day after! Please check out the "Halloween 3-Pronged Policy"  below.  No surprises here, just common sense.

Marshall's 3-Pronged Policy -----E   (get it?)
1.  Any Halloween activities must be aligned with standards and instruction.

2.  Aligned Halloween activities must not impact or interrupt other school programs, schedules, or special classes, including but not limited to RTI.

3.  Costumes must be school appropriate following the guidelines below.  If your students wish to come in costume, please make sure you pass along and monitor these guidelines.

  • If costumes are in any way unsafe students will be required to remove them.
    • No attire may be worn which would in any way impede the student from moving safely and quickly out of the building in the event of an alarm.
    • If students must change, they will be sent to the nurse's office or  they will be required to stay in the office until parents arrive with a change of clothes.
  • Costumes must not obstruct vision or movement or in any way present a hazard to the student or other classmates.
    • Masks may not be worn.  Not even outside the classroom.
  • No fake knives, swords, or guns of any kind may be used as a part of any costume.
    • Such items will be confiscated and may result in disciplinary action including but not limited to suspension from school.
  • Costumes must not be overly gruesome and overtly violent.
  • Inflatables must be deflated inside to safely move around the building.  They may inflate outside for play.
Also, please keep in mind: many of our constituents find the celebration of Halloween to be offensive, contrary to their religious beliefs, or just a distraction from what should otherwise be a normal, productive day of school.  In planning to incorporate Halloween into your teaching next week, should you choose to do so, please recognize and honor each individual's position on this issue and their right to hold it.  You may not choose to exclude from instruction students who choose not to recognize Halloween.  Please keep in mind: a separate-but-equal instructional program for such students is most often neither.

Thank you for you help in enforcing the "Halloween 3-Pronged Policy".  Please share your educational ideas and photos with the rest of us.
