Fire Marshal Update
Status: FAIL!  
No worries, FUSD maintenance is working on most of the fixes.  Please note the following:  

~If you have a space heater, it must have a fire certification label and be plugged into the original outlet.  It cannot be plugged into the power strip.  

~Remember, NO extension cords.  If you need a long power strip, we can get that for you.  Thank you. 

Fingers crossed we can get it all done within the 10 days required. 

RTI Corner

Happy New Year and New RTI Cycle!

We have finished the Benchmark testing, the GDMs and forming new groups.  Thank you for all your time, patience and input as we do our very best to help students close the gap in reading.  Looking at the data showed how hard you are working at making sure your students are getting the education they deserve, even virtually.

You should have received an email from either me or Russ with your RTI groups and who will be teaching those groups. If there are errors- PLEASE  let us know immediately.  It is really hard to fix errors on the day RTI starts. Can you please add our Zoom links to your Canvas/ Google classroom so that students can just join us at the RTI time. ~RTI will resume Tuesday, January 19, 2021.   ~Here’s to a great quarter of reading growth!

Learning to surf in 2021

I genuinely thank each of you for all you did for each other and for our students during what was yet another historic week in educating students through a national tragedy.  You were genuine, honest and hopeful.  While there is no playbook, your professionalism and desire to find a lesson in the unthinkable was important and impressive.  As I have said many time, there is no other group of educators and colleagues I would rather navigate these unpredictable waters with.  I mean it! 

Thank you all for you attention during our important staff meeting on Friday.  I am so glad we were able to showcase the ideas and progress your school committees have accomplished in the first semester.  We are ready to move forward with our action plans, monthly celebrations, continued learning and growing throughout our 2nd semester.  Together, we rise!  #MarshallElevatED

Restorative Practices
Restorative Practices, sometimes called Restorative Justice, at its heart invites us to engage with students, parents/caregivers, and colleagues in a way that honors the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals so that everyone can thrive and grow to their full potential.  We interact with students in ways that nurtures, guides, and supports. It challenges traditional power dynamics.  

With that in mind, these vocabulary words help us to understand the Three Core Needs that serve as pillars of Restorative Practices/Justice:

• Autonomy: a sense of personal control and empowerment
• Order: a sense of trust about the world we live in and how it works
• Relatedness: a sense of connection and where we fit in our relationships

Action Steps to Support Just and Equitable Learning Environments:

• Culturally Inclusive Pedagogy: decisions are made that honor and respect all people regardless of their race, ethnicity, language, gender, sexual orientation, income, or ability
• Full Participation for All Members of the Community: work to blend Restorative Practices, discipline, and instructional needs; allow students to have equitable participation.  This is not limited to students only.  All who have stake in the decisions being made should be invited so that their voices are heard.  Place a priority on the involvement of parents, caregivers, and family members as essential members of the learning community.

A new beginning! Welcome 2021!!

I really hope a much needed disconnect was successfully executed by all! 

I hope you had a wonderful, safe and relaxing winter break!  I hope you are ready to take each and every one of our students to their next level!  I know you have not been in their homes for over 2 weeks.  They missed you and their classmates more than you know.  They are ready for you! Let's just hope their iPads are ready too.  As we being our 2nd semester, let's continue to make every moment of everyday count for every kid!  Every kid, every lesson, everyday!

Reminder of FUSD Travel Expectations

District Expectation:

With substantial spread of COVID-19 staff and students should avoid travel when possible, especially on public transportation (e.g. airplanes, trains, busses, etc.)

Staff/Students should follow CDC Guidelines and think critically about travel prior to leaving. Don’t travel if you are sick or if you have been around someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days. Don’t travel with someone who is sick.

Site Implementation:

While Traveling:

• Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arm lengths) from anyone who did not travel with you, particularly in crowded areas. It’s important to do this everywhere — both indoors and outdoors.

• Wear a mask to keep your nose and mouth covered when you are in shared spaces outside of your home, including when using public transportation.

• Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Watch your health: Look for symptoms of COVID-19, and take your temperature if you feel sick.

Upon your return to Flagstaff:

• Avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether you get tested or not.

• If there are people in the household who did not travel with you, wear a mask and ask everyone in the household to wear masks in shared spaces inside your home for 14 days after travel.

• Self-monitor for 14 days, meaning people should remain alert for any symptoms related to COVID-19.
