Spotlight: Meet Ashley Hartsock, Art & Science Integration Specialist
Mrs. Hartsock is hard at work contacting community partners and getting the Magnet Monday catalog put together, so if you have any cool ideas or changes you would like to make let her know ASAP! She is also here to help you in a variety of ways: she is certified to drive the white buses and vans and would love to assist you in planning and running your field trips! She is also experienced as a 6th grade math teacher so feel free to reach out for math support. She is the nurse at Puente on Fridays, so Monday through Thursday she is here and her door is always open! Feel free to drop by to discuss plans, talk through ideas or ask for help with whatever you may need.

Grading
practices – MYTH – If a student gets all items correct on an assessment that
student receives a 4. NO, not necessarily. Each assignment should have an
identified proficiency scale to define the mark. If the assignment demonstrated
level 3 proficiency then getting all answers correct is no more than a 3.
Please remember our expectation of the proficiency scales. Level 4 – Student
can teach another student, demonstrates deeper understanding of grade-level
standards, extends ideas and draws connections to real-world situations, and
demonstrates complex level of knowledge and understanding. Consistent practices
should be a part of the collaborative meetings to ensure that expectations of
mastery are aligned. In addition, when appropriate, each assessment should have
an opportunity to demonstrate a level 4 proficiency.
ELA
reporting – Writing Foundation Standards added – For the 2019-2020 school year
Writing Foundations Standards have been added to the elementary standards
report. This standard incorporates handwriting skills (specifically beginning
in 2nd grade pertaining to manuscript and then adding cursive in 3rd grade)
along with spelling skills in K- 3. 4th and 5th grades only identify read and
write cursive and manuscript. Evidence of learning for this particular standard
could be incorporated into various assignments and not necessarily a
stand-alone assignment. Work with your grade level teams to identify which
assignments will include a handwriting grade. The proficiency level to support
handwriting would be represented as a level 3 (unless someone could identify a
level 4 expectation here?). Additionally, the board approved handwriting style
is ball and stick (Zaner Bloser free resources online).

Hello Teachers,
I wanted to inform you that all current student and teacher
accounts have been uploaded into Learning.com and classes have been created
within your teacher account for the use of EasyTech (the FUSD board approved
technology curriculum) by your students.
You can login to Learning.com at: https://login.learning.com/
Your teacher username & password will likely be
firstinitiallastname (example: jstone)
The district is: fusd
You will need to assign curriculum content to your class(es) and
will probably want to print either a roster (single page) of student usernames
and passwords or individual student login cards. The resources at https://www.fusd1.org/easytech are sure
to be helpful with this process.
There have been some major updates and feature additions within
Learning.com recently, including:

Skills Checks – These quick formative assessments will
provide educators with information on student understanding of essential
digital literacy skills needed in school, for online testing, and beyond. Each
unit begins with a pre-test and concludes with a post test, making it easy to
identify skills gaps and measure growth through participation in the lessons
within that particular instructional unit. The data from the skills checks will be used in place
of a comprehensive skills assessment at the end of the school year, so please
be sure to have students complete the pre and post skills checks that are part
of the grade specific FUSD custom curriculum.

FUSD Custom Curriculum Bundles - Each of the FUSD custom
curriculum bundles now start with digital citizenship. This is
intentional as the teaching of digital citizenship at each grade level is a
federal requirement for funding as well as establishing a safe and respectful
foundation for technology use and behaviors at the start of the school year. Be certain to cover the
required digital safety/citizenship discussions and lessons as you will be
required to complete and sign a verification form stating that you have covered
this content with students by December 2019.
