Hello February 2019!

Fire & Safety Preparedness@ Marshall
Thank you for your professionalism during all drills.  I know they are disruptive, too frequent and I'm told there has never been a school fire-related death in U.S. history (B. Kuhn~ I have not verified).  Nevertheless, they are important! I'd like to share a special story from this Thursday:
As you are likely aware, the police-involved shootout in Railroad Springs took place very near many of our families and some staff members. A mom approached me on Thursday morning.  She was traumatize.  Her family lives directly behind the incident.  The shots were loud, the helicopters were loud and the anxiety was high. She brought her tired student to school because she wanted routine and she wanted to send us a message...
"Thank you for taking safety so seriously at Marshall.  We stared in amazement as our son grabbed his little brother and a book.  He told us all to stay calm and that we are safest in a lock down." He read to his little brother in the corner adding to calm, not the chaos.  He prepared his family based on what he has learned at school.  They were incredibly impressed and very thankful. So am I. Thank you.  You make a difference with all you say and do!!!

Finally, it is my understanding that the Fire Marshal begins school visits in February.  From what I remember, here are a few items to consider as you look around your area:

  • Broken ceiling tiles. If you have broken tiles in your classroom's ceiling, please let Erin or Malinda know so we can create a work order to get them fixed.
  • Inside of classroom doors. You may have a few things affixed to the outside of your classroom door, but you must have NOTHING taped to or affixed to the door on the inside of the door. I don't know why.
  • Extension cords. If a device is not plugged directly into a wall outlet it must otherwise ONLY be plugged into a working surge-protected power strip. NO EXTENSION CORDS may be used anywhere within the school building.
  • Fabric drapes and curtains. Any/all fabric covering your walls, windows, shelves must have proof of fire-proofedness attached (or in your possession) or be treated with fire-retardant spray. Tule-type netting cannot be treated with spray and must be removed IMMEDIATELY
  • Evacuation maps. Your map should be affixed to the left or right of your door at eye level. You must indicate on your map your classroom's location ("You are here") and highlight your particular exit route.

Dismissal Procedures
Thank you all for your cooperation with this new dismissal format. I hope clarifying the following expectations will assist us all in cleaning up this process.  Please share the following with your students:
1) Students must be dismissed by the teacher, not the bell.
2) Students must walk directly to their designated area (gym bus line, FACTS, Co-Op, front entry for parent pick-up).  No bathroom stops or detours unless given permission by teacher.
3) When in gym bus line, NO FOOD or DRINK allowed.  Keep all belongings packed up.
4) When loading a bus, all students must remain in a single-file line. Clumping is not safe and causes confusion as we load 3 buses at a time.
5) We will begin loading at 3:25pm.  That gives them only 5 min. to get to the gym and line up. Again, no bathroom stops.  There is NO reason to miss a bus.  No time to lag.
6) Remember, you are the last impression of their time at Marshall.  Take a moment to wish them a good evening or ask about their day!  It goes a long way!!

A four-day work week...

It's a four-day work week!  Will it goes as fast as a three-day weekend?  Hold on tight!!!

Schedule change I just realized that the district mandated site Professional Learning date (February 15th) is also on a 3-day weekend.  I am moving it up a week to February 8th. Mark your calendars.

AdvancED
As we discussed in our staff meeting, we are moving toward full district accreditation.  You will see Mr. Penca, Mr. McAllister, Mrs. Overton and I coming around conducting a data collection session on February 8th from 10:30-11:30am.  Data will be collected on the learning environment, equitable learning, high expectations, supportive learning, active learning, progress monitoring, well-managed learning and Digital learning.  This is NOT an evaluation of your teaching, but more of a data collection across the district for continuous improvement efforts.
You should have complete the staff survey.
If not, please do so by Wednesday, January 23rd.
The student survey will be conducted by Mr. McAllister for grades 3-5 during technology class.  Thank you Mr. McAllister!

I attended an admin meeting last week on GRADEBOOK practices and procedures

Northern Arizona University Partnerships

Marshall is bursting with student teachers from NAU this semester! I am so excited for them and all they will experience here at Marshall. We will meet our student teachers at the staff meeting on Tuesday morning.  We will also have Praxis program coordinators come talk with us about the NAU Praxis program which will begin at Marshall in two weeks. I cannot assume we all know about this program.  Here is a brief description:
The Praxis Partnership is a local, school-based program with embedded reflection and coaching specifically designed for dual majors in both special and elementary education. This program is designed to prepare candidates to effectively teach all learners of all abilities, focusing on the many connections as well as cognitive, social and cultural differences among students. Faculty partner with strong local schools and teachers as candidates are placed in multiple school-based practicum opportunities. Special Education and Elementary Education courses are taught over four semesters starting in the 2nd semester of the sophomore year and followed through the entire program by Praxis coordinating faculty. The Praxis partnership is built upon the foundation of reflective practices, then built with effective inclusive practices including Universal Design for Learning, Culturally Responsive Teaching, and Growth Mindset.
