I hope you enjoy your 3-day weekend. Let's crush the short week ahead.
Spotlight: Meet Emily Gerlick, Resource Teacher 4-5
Hi, My name is Emily Gerlick and I am the 4th/5th Resource teacher at Marshall. I am grateful to be working with such an amazing staff! I will try my best to accommodate, modify, and collaborate with all teachers. 😊 I recently moved to Flagstaff from Phoenix and am loving it here! I was born in raised just outside of Chicago, IL. If you have ever seen the movie Groundhog’s Day, that is my home town! When I am not at school you can find me on a trail somewhere. Last Sunday, I ran a trail marathon up by the North Rim. The terrain was absolutely beautiful. I also love learning and trying to cook new recipes. I am so grateful to be apart of the Marshall family and am looking forward to this school and most of all doing what is best for students.Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship education in grades K-12 is required for FUSD to comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and receive E-rate funds. Although only one lesson must be taught from the Digital Citizenship/Internet Safety Education to meet the Federal Internet Safety requirements, FUSD strongly encourages digital citizenship instruction throughout the academic year, as it provides an opportunity to set expectations for online behavior and prepares students for college, career, and life.
To accomplish this:
- Teachers may teach any of the grade-appropriate lessons from the following resources to their students (K-12).
- It is recommended that the FUSD Student Responsible Use Agreement (signed and returned to the school) be used as an instructional tool to build understanding with students about digital citizenship.
- Once the digital citizenship lesson has been completed, each teacher must sign the FUSD Teacher Verification Form and submit it to their school office. Completed verification forms should be collected at the school sites and then sent (via district mail) to Ruth Thomas by December 20th.

As you begin the school year and prepare students for their future please consider making digital citizenship an early and ongoing goal.
We will absolutely cover this in our 9/13 PD.
Lego League Robotics
Are you ready to learn something new? Christine Sapio and the CocoNuts (National competitors) are hosting a 301 training in late September. Lego League Robotics is one of Magnet Monday's most popular electives and we need a teacher. The purpose of the training is to assure the teacher is comfortable enough with the Lego Robots so you can facilitate activities with the students weekly. Marshall can even become competitive in the state missions. Each mission has a particular objective and many ways to program the robot to get there. In the training, learn lots of skill building activities to do with the kids. Please email me if you are interested (K-5, not just 3-5)! It would be so disappointing to lose this opportunity and investment.
Listening Circles
Community circles are a simple instructional routine that can transform your classroom. Used with intention, circles shape a listening culture where students practice giving attention to each other and "saying just enough" -- two essential skills for healthy relationships.

This video below is from Houston Kraft, our Welcome Back FUSD keynote speaker with Character Strong. I
am often wearing my "PERSPECTACLES". This is truly a powerful reminder
for us all when dealing with our students, our parents, and each other.
Ask yourself, "Would you treat our students differently if you knew their story?" I often ask myself "what power do I have as an educator to help our students in EVERY way possible"? My greatest power is to listen with intent, to get to know each student's story and to show kindness and empathy. If only they all believed in themselves the way we believe in them...
