Walk to school day from Holly Thompson

This Wednesday 10/2 is International Walk to School Day. If you can come to the National Guard Armory and help escort kids to school, let Holly know. The county supports us, as well as NAU's ROTC, but our students really like to walk with their teachers. Be at the Armory about 8 to meet the buses and enjoy the crisp morning air.

Spotlight: Meet Nurse Liz Walmer
 

Hi Marshall team. This is Nurse Liz and I am so excited to be your school nurse. I moved to Flagstaff just over 4 years ago and have held a few different nursing positions within the district but have always wanted to be at Marshall. Before moving here I lived in the Phoenix area and worked for 15 years at the same elementary school in Tempe. My husband and I have 2 grown children, 1 dog, 3 cats and a really old fish. Gardening is my favorite hobby but I also love going to concerts, traveling, and taking long walks. My goal here at Marshall is to do whatever I can to minimize health related barriers to student learning. Please don’t hesitate to let me know how I can help.

The term learning disability, also referred to as specific learning disability, is an umbrella term that covers a range of neurologically based disorders in learning and various degrees of severity of such disorders. As many as 15% of children have a learning disability.

Broadly speaking, these disorders involve difficulty in one or more, but not uniformly in all, basic psychological processes, such as input (auditory or visual perception), integration (sequencing, abstraction, and organization), memory (working, short term, and long term memory), or output (expressive language).Children with learning disabilities may have trouble with one or more of the following skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and math. Other terms sometimes used when referring to learning disabilities include dyslexia (difficulty with reading), dyscalculia (difficulty with math), or dysgraphia (difficulty with written expression).

Learning disabilities are not emotional disturbances, intellectual disabilities, or sensory impairments. They are not caused by cultural or language differences or a lack of educational opportunity. Cognitive assessment, including psychoeducational or neuropsychological evaluation, is of critical importance in diagnosing a learning disability. Learning disabilities may be diagnosed by qualified school or educational psychologists, by clinical psychologists, and by clinical neuropsychologists who are trained and experienced in the assessment of learning disabilities.

Math Playground is a great website with hundreds of math games appropriate for K-8 students. You can search for games by grade level, by topic, or by question type. There are
more than 100 instructional videos in Math Playground’s video library.

Marshall has been chosen by Superintendent Penca for the AdvancED (now cognia) accreditation visit in November!!!  This is a true testament to the confidence he has in our school, our teachers, and our students! For the month of Oct., we will focus on the 7 learning environments that are observed using the eleot observation tool.  Please take time to view details re: Environment A: Equitable Learning and Environment B: High Expectations.  Remember, this is an observation tool, not an evaluation tool.  We will continue to talk about this in CT's.  

 It is my goal to have all things AdvancED/Cognia on 

THE HUB by the end of the week.

• Friday, October 4^th – End of Quarter 1 – Attendance Rollover and Specials Grades by 12 noon
• October 7^th-9^th – Parent/Teacher Conferences – Standards Reports should be present at conference

Autumnal Equinox

The cooler temperatures have arrived just in time!  Here we go into another season of color changes, mind growth, shorter days and longer nights. Make sure you are taking the time for YOU! 

Spotlight: Meet Jaunita Sanchez, lunch duty aid 
Hello Marshall Mustangs.  

My name aka: Ms. Juanita.  I was warmly welcomed by the Marshall School staff and students at the beginning of this new school year and I want to THANK Everyone for being so kind to me from day One.

I grew up here in Flagstaff; attending Mt. Elden (Killip) elementary (Yes that Was a LONG time ago, Thank you :)..  East Flag Jr. High (MEMS) and graduating from Coconino High School.  I have worked in the FUSD1 school system since 1986 for about 15 years while my two children worked their way through elementary and Jr. High school years.  I have a son, a daughter and 3 grandsons and a large family many living in the Phoenix Valley.

Although I am not a Certified teacher, I have taught children from Headstart to High school, Sunday school, Adult ministries, and I have Loved all of it.  

Growing up, I played softball, ran track, cross country skied, hiked the Grand Canyon, rode the waves on river trips. These are the things I most enjoyed, mostly now, spending time with my grandsons; playing ball and board games, legos and puzzles, swimming, fishing, going to the movies, and of course, eating out!  I am loving the time I get to serve at and with my church family and, also remodeling my home and keeping up my yard.

It is a pleasure and a joy being a new member of the Marshall Mustang family and I hope to get to know all of you as we work and play together.  Let’s have a wonderful and Blessed year.

The Flagstaff Festival of Science is a FREE 10-day event occurring each fall with field trips, guided hikes, star parties, open houses, hands-on exhibits, presentations and archaeological excavations! This year, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, we are also offering an 18 month-long Lunar Legacy Lecture Series.

Information about two rare disorders this week that affect two of our students. 

Mitochondrial Disease awareness week: Sept. 15th-21st
(my son, Ryder Hauer, had a mito disorder: Alper’s Syndrome)

How does Mitochondrial Disease affect the body?

The parts of the body that need the most energy, such as the heart, brain, muscles and lungs, are the most affected by mitochondrial disease. The affected individual may have strokes, seizures, gastro-intestinal problems, (reflux, severe vomiting, constipation, diarrhea), swallowing difficulties, failure to thrive, blindness, deafness, heart and kidney problems, muscle failure, heat/cold intolerance, diabetes, lactic acidosis, immune system problems and liver disease.

IMPORTANT for YOU as an educator to know about our student/s with Mito:

• When is someone with Mitochondrial Disease at the highest risk?

The child is at highest risk for neurological and organ damage during and for the two weeks following an illness. Therefore even a simple flu or cold virus can have devastating effects on the patient, even death.

Professionals tend to come to work when they don’t feel well. They push through it because they feel they can and don’t want students affected by their absence. Taking care of yourself is taking care of our students! 😷

GAND Awareness Day September 16, 2019 

GATAD2B-associated neurodevelopmental disorder is an inherited condition that is characterized by severe intellectual disability. Other signs and symptoms vary but may include limited speech development, poor muscle tone in children (childhood hypotonia), thin hair, distinctive facial features, and long fingers. The condition is caused by changes (mutations) in the GATAD2B gene or a loss (deletion) of the part of the chromosome 1 where the GATAD2B gene is located (1q21.3). The condition may occur de novo or be inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
As of September 2019, there are over 140 known cases of affected individuals with GAND from 24 countries. (1 is a student at Marshall)
This disorder is very rare. There is not much reliable information about it. If you’d like more information about how GAND affects one of our students, Eva Herberger would gladly share her knowledge!

Mustang Gallop!

Building community while supporting our school!  Go Mustangs...to the moon and back! Throwing it back with these two cuties (mine 😎). 

We have made a few changes for gallop safety and FHS homecoming parade safety.  It is a delicate dance with the gallop, lunch and the parade schedule.  For safety, we will avoid primary lunch recess during the intermediate gallop time.  Last year we had a few littles run into the path of our bigs.  We also need to be sure all students are supervised during the parade AND eat lunch.  Please note the schedules below.  K-3 teachers, please drop off and pick up students from the cafeteria (you do not have to stay for 10 min).  4/5 teachers, you will grab sack lunches and eat during the parade.  If anyone cannot be with their class during the parade, you must let me know so we can arrange coverage.  Again, this means no recesses are scheduled after lunch.  Finally, FHS students will not be delivering candy, they will give us FHS cups! Too cool.

All students should bring a water bottle.
