9 teachers out on Friday (sigh)
Things to do to hopefully get Apple Classroom working:
Have teacher iPad updated (there was a new one 8/17)
Have all student iPads updated
When the “Apple ID Verification” screen comes up on students iPads have students re-sign in using their birthday as the password ex: mm/dd/yyyy
In self-service reinstall Apple Classroom
Try and do all of these before Wednesday 8/24. There should be a sync that night & that will hopefully help. I will send out an email if I hear anything else. (:
I hope clarifying the following expectations will assist us all finishing our day as safely as we begin our day.
Please share the following with your students:
1) Students must be dismissed by the teacher, not the bell.
2) Students will walk directly to their designated area (gym bus line, FACTS, front entry for parent pick-up). No bathroom stops or detours unless given permission by teacher.
3) When in gym bus line, NO FOOD or DRINK allowed. Keep all belongings packed up. Students must sit and keep volume down.
4) When loading a bus, all students must remain in a single-file line. Kinders load first. **Please check all Kinder name tags on the backpack to be sure they are on the right bus as they load! We have had some on the wrong bus.
5) We will begin loading at 3:25pm (12:30pm on Fri.). That gives them only 5 min. to get to the gym and line up. Again, no bathroom stops. There is NO reason to miss a bus. No time to lag.
6) Remember, you are the last impression of their time at Marshall. Take a moment to wish them a good evening or ask about their day! It goes a long way!!
Thank you all for your continued support in helping students adhere to these expectations!

The Arboretum at Flagstaff in the Fall
Is your team interested in exploring Colorado Plateau ecosystems?
These field trips are designed to engage students with place-based learning opportunities that encourage discovery and enjoyment of the natural world by utilizing the 200 acres at The Arboretum; including the greenhouses, gardens, pond, and forest areas. Field trips last around 1-2 hours and your group can enjoy lunch on site. If you are interested in scheduling a field trip, please fill out the Field Trip Request Form or contact their Education Programs Manager Helena Murray at Helena.Murray@thearb.org
Available field trips for Fall 2022:
All Grades: Optional Mini-Hike
The 30-45 minute mini-hike will take place in the areas of The Arb not covered in the field trip portion. These areas include the greenhouse, the pond, the herb garden, and the trails connecting these areas.
Preschool / Kindergarten: The Five-Alive Senses
Students will be led through The Arb grounds where they will practice using all five senses and discover the ways our senses can be used to explore nature. Highlights include listening to frogs and birds by the pond, smelling plants in the Herb Garden, and feeling different types of conifers on the woodland path.
1st Grade: Our Homes in the Forest
This program introduces students to the concept of habitat by relating their homes to animal homes. Students learn that animals need a place to live, food to eat, and water to drink - just like we do! We specifically explore the relationships between Abert's squirrels, birds, insects, and ponderosa pines as we make our way through the forest.
2nd Grade: Life Cycles on the Colorado Plateau
Students will learn about and compare the different stages in the development of a Western Chorus Frog and a Dragonfly/Damselfly as well as other seasonal plants and animals. They will spend time investigating organisms found in The Arb pond and work together to identify the life cycle stage of each critter discovered.
3rd Grade: Animal Needs and Adaptations
Students will learn about the importance of riparian areas to plants and wildlife in Arizona as well as the adaptations needed for living in water at different stages of life. They will explore, identify, and share their findings about aquatic invertebrates in The Arb's riparian areas with classmates.
4th Grade: Plant Superheroes
Plant superheroes don’t always wear capes! What would happen if we had no plants? Students discover why we need plants and how plants are able to thrive in our arid, high-elevation ecosystem. Students engage in hands-on activities that help build observation skills and promote critical thinking about the plant world and its amazing adaptations.
5th Grade: Fifth Grade Foresters/Forest Investigators
Students will learn about forest ecology and will be able to recognize indicators of healthy and unhealthy forests in our fire-adapted ecosystem. Students will become foresters for a day. Practicing science skills, students evaluate sections of the forest and offer solutions for improving forest health.
Want to go on a field trip but aren’t quite sure yet? Send an email to Helena.Murray@thearb.org to discuss opportunities for virtual or in class options.
We have secured outside funding (CCESA) for a Social Worker to work with our students two days a week! Mrs. C. and I are working closly with Everybody Matters to get this program up and running very soon. Our students deserve the best of our servies.

Did you know? ELL AZELLA Placement Testing
The following procedure is used to determine a student's eligibility for ELL services.
When a parent registers a student new to the district, he/she is required to fill out a Home Language Survey known as HLS (no more phlote).
The responses to this Home Language Survey (HLS) are used by the school to provide the most appropriate instructional programs and services for the student. The answers below will determine if a student will take the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) Placement Test.
1. What language do people speak in the home most of the time?
2. What language does the student speak most of the time?
3. What language did the student first speak or understand?
If a parent responds to at least one of the questions on the phlote as other than English, the information will be verified through the Arizona Department of Education Office of English Language Acquisition Services to determine whether the student needs to be administered the AZELLA Placement Test.
