Language to send to families for our
"MARSHALL MOMENT"

Dear Marshall Families,
Several laws impacting public education were passed in the 2022 Arizona Legislative session and signed by Governor Ducey. One of those laws impacts the Moment of Silent Reflection time implemented in our school classrooms. House Bill 2707 amended state statute to require K-12 public schools to set aside at least one (1) minute and no more than two (2) minutes at the beginning of every school day for a moment of silent reflection. Students are prohibited from interfering with other students’ participation in the moment of silence. All school personnel are prohibited from suggesting the content of the reflection, however, teachers are required to encourage parents to discuss with their children how to use the moment of silence. Please take time to discuss with your child how to best use this moment of silent reflection time and the importance of not interfering with other students’ participation. This state law goes into effect on September 24, 2022.  The 1 minute "Marshall Moment" will take place after the pledge of allegiance in our morning announcements.
Sincerely, (Teacher Name)

Help us see behind the scenes!  Take a moment to validate a Wingman!

New App Launched for the Festival of Science!

The Flagstaff Festival of Science Board of Directors just launched a new app designed to give festival-goers a fun, convenient way to discover all the wonders of science that are in store for them at this year’s Festival, Sept. 23-Oct. 2, 2022.

The Festival offers more than 100 events this year, including early childhood activities, webinars, lectures, panels, guided hikes, networking events, workshops and more. This can be very exciting but also daunting to a Festival attendee,” he said. “The app enables participants to tailor their Festival experiences to their interests. It’s easy for them to add events to their personal calendars and access all the great online content we’ve generated since 2015.”

ADE Literacy Endorsement, 2028
ADE has finished the RFI process and published the list of approved trainings for the K-5 Literacy Endorsement.  All teachers who provide literacy instruction in K through 5th grade must have a literacy endorsement by 2028.  This includes:
  • A. Three semester hours of college coursework or 45 clock hours of approved trainings in the science of reading instruction, including systematic phonics instruction; and

  • B. Three semester hours of college coursework or 45 clock hours of approved training in reading instruction, including assessments, instructional practices, and interventions to improve student reading proficiency for struggling readers, including students with the characteristics of dyslexia

They also must pass the Foundations of Reading exam by Pearson.
The good news is that LETRS 3rd Edition covers all the training hour requirements.  I know many schools are participating in the 3rd Edition training through our district and Sopris Learning, or through CCESA.  Hopefully the district will be able to continue those partnerships in the future.

Also, Nancy is following up with PDX Reading Specialist representative to see what our teachers who took the Dyslexia training will need to do in order to bump up their hours from 36 to the 48 noted on the approved training list.  Hopefully this will give those teachers who took dyslexia training at least half the hours needed for the K-5 Literacy Endorsement. Please stay tuned for an update from Nancy.
If you already have the endorsement, you are good to go!

You can find out more information about the K-5 Literacy Endorsement on the ADE website:  https://www.azed.gov/standards-practices/k-5literacyendorsement
