...21st day of September!
Digital Citizenship Lessons
Digital citizenship education in grades K-12 is required for FUSD to comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and receive E-rate funds. In addition, current academic standards include digital citizenship as an essential curriculum component. In order to better prepare our students for life in a digital world and to meet Federal obligations, all FUSD students must receive at least one lesson related to internet safety/digital citizenship during each school year (starting in SY 2012-13).
Although only one lesson must be taught to meet federal requirements, FUSD strongly encourages digital citizenship instruction throughout the academic year, as it provides an opportunity to set expectations for online behavior and prepares students for college, career, and life.
The FUSD Digital Citizenship Curriculum has been revised for the 2022 school year, to include Nearpod lessons that are ready to teach. These lessons are located in the curriculum document on the FUSD website, linked below, as well as in the District Library in Nearpod. There is one required lesson at each grade level, 2-3 recommended lessons at each grade level, and an online verification form to be completed by each staff member that teaches the curriculum with students. View the curriculum and the online verification form at: https://www.fusd1.org/internetsafety
All required lessons should be taught, and the verification form should be completed by the teacher no later than December 9th, 2022.
Progress Monitoring Schedule from Heather Overton. Progress monitoring will begin Sept. 27th. Please view HERE.
New MacBook Air Support!
Congratulations on your new work tool! I know it is exciting (and for some, frustrating). Patience is going to be our greatest friend! This blog is delayed due to reprogramming. I know you are going through the same! We've got support for this and more if needed:
From Ashley Esparza.
I am the FUSD Technology & Innovation Specialist and will be working along with Renda Fisk and Heather Zeigler to support Educational Technology in FUSD. A large part of my role is to support teachers and staff by providing professional development opportunities focused on innovative technology integration.
I am hoping to come to Marshall on Monday, 10/3 from 3:30-4:30 to offer a Q&A session to support teachers/staff with questions about their use of/transition to MacBook laptops, Canvas, and/or Nearpod.
We have so many opportunities listed below to help you keep it all organized.
The Arizona Department of Education is offering several upcoming professional learning activities. As these are not being provided/facilitated by FUSD in order to obtain any compensation credit (salary advancement or classroom site fund) a certificate of completion and evidence of course completion off contract time (if necessary) will need to be uploaded as part of the completion of the Outside Provider PD Submittal Form within the Professional Learning module of the Frontline System.
ADE is offering the following virtual sessions via Zoom and all are free to attend. Click the session link to view the session description and to pre-register.

Restorative Practices
From Superintendent Penca
During the 2022-2023 school year, FUSD staff will begin using a revised Discipline Matrix, which incorporates the Restorative Practices philosophy into preventative and accountability approaches, as a guide for our daily interactions with students, managing behavior, and identifying practices for repairing harm. The efforts of the staff who collaborated on this revision are much appreciated.

Dreambox is differentiated for the student's current ability and understanding. So, no matter where they are, they will be given lessons at their "zone of proximal development."
This means all students should be experiencing some struggle. I say this because this has come up as one of the barriers or challenges to more engagement with the tool. Students can and will get frustrated.
Struggle is totally OK...as long as they persist! (Also, it should be noted that students should entirely be answering questions on their own and without significant help from a teacher or aide as this could trick the program into thinking the student understands more than they do. If they do not know the answer, they can use the "hint" button and/or make their best guess.)
Our research internally is fairly consistent with the external research on the program. Students who engage with five lessons per week experience more than a year's worth of growth per year. (We don't want to make the mistake of thinking that students who do this are guaranteed to score "proficient" on the state exams. The goal is to maximize growth. The research shows us that these students are further along than they would have been had they not done Dreambox.)
I hope that answers some burning questions out there. Also, as a final reminder, Dreambox is the only district-wide-and-approved math support software we have. It should be the first thing your teachers should work in before attempting to use any of the other math tools at their disposal.
Please direct any questions to me and/or Jane Gaun about this. We are happy to continue to support.
NOTE from Reasor: Many of you have been requesting Reflex for Math Fluency. It is $3,500.00 / year. We MUST be in compliance with Dreambox expectations before we can spend money on another program.
TEI (Teacher Evaluation Tool)
Feedback on improvements for the tool and system have led to some changes this year. Some changes you will see will include changes to the pre-observation questions (reduced from 15 to 4), we have eliminated the Individual Professional Learning Plan (IPLP) from the system, and we have updated Ethics and Professional Norms to be completed once towards the end of the school year. I will be looking to set up observations beginning in October. If you would like to get ahead of the game, please review the 4 pre-observation questions. I will provide more detail following my ELETEAM (Elem. Principal) meeting on Wed, Sept. 21.

Fiesta Bowl - Wishes for Teachers
Random draw!!! $2,500 to 400 AZ teachers!!!
Created in 2016, the Palo Verde Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program grants classroom wishes to teachers across the state of Arizona. The Fiesta Bowl organization saw that many teachers spent their own money to enhance their classroom experience and developed a program to aid teachers in that effort. As a way to support, celebrate and honor Arizona educators, teachers are invited to fill out an online application detailing their school and classroom wish. Wishes are selected by a random drawing to receive a grant. All wish recipients become part of the Fiesta Bowl family and can participate in community events throughout the year. In its six years, Wishes for Teachers granted over $4.7 million to more than 1,200 Arizona teachers, impacting 500,000+ students across the state.

Sandra Day O'Connor Civics Day is coming up...
Monday, the 26th.
Below you will find the AZ legal language around this day.
In this day and age, and with an election coming up in November, this is a great opportunity to inject some civics experiences into their learning day.

If Sandra Day O'Connor Civics Celebration Day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or other day when a public school is not in session, the preceding or following school day shall be observed in the public school as the holiday.

|
The Flagstaff Festival of Science Board of Directors just launched a new app designed to give festival-goers a fun, convenient way to discover all the wonders of science that are in store for them at this year’s Festival, Sept. 23-Oct. 2, 2022. The Festival offers more than 100 events this year, including early childhood activities, webinars, lectures, panels, guided hikes, networking events, workshops and more. This can be very exciting but also daunting to a Festival attendee,” he said. “The app enables participants to tailor their Festival experiences to their interests. It’s easy for them to add events to their personal calendars and access all the great online content we’ve generated since 2015.” |
