Hello 2023!

Snow delay, YES! Snow Day, not yet...

New year brings new money!!

That's right!  Congratulations to Linda Stamer who received an award of a Debbi Grogan
grant request in the amount of $1,485 from the FUSD Foundation!

Congratulations to Katie Krause who received an award of a Micro-Grant request in the amount of $500 from the FUSD Foundation!

Would you like to receive $29.80/hr to work on the school's Improvement Action Plan (IAP) off contract hours? The comprehensive plan is due mid-March and if you would like to analyze the Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA) results and execute a detailed plan through ADE as a part of your school's leadership team, let me know ASAP.  Many hands make light work. For those of you already on the School Leadership Team, I will reach out with details to make sure you are paid for your time and efforts.

In Classroom Learning Opportunities with The Arboretum at Flagstaff!

Winter is here and although our grounds are closed for the season, educational opportunities are still available for our Flagstaff students.

We are offering K-5 in-classroom lessons both in-person and virtually with topics ranging from habitats and ecosystems to forest health and management. These lessons are a great introduction to our spring and fall field trips at The Arboretum and help students make real world connections to the concepts discussed in class. Each lesson is designed to encourage conscientious stewardship of our environment by providing hands-on interactive learning opportunities.  Our standard curriculum includes:

  • Kindergarten: Five Alive Senses; using the five senses to explore nature

  • 1st Grade: Our Homes in the Forest (habitats and ecosystems)

  • 2nd Grade: Life cycles on the Colorado Plateau

  • 3rd Grade: Animal Needs and Adaptations

  • 4th Grade: Plant Superheroes (Adaptations)

  • 5th Grade: Forest Investigators

  • 6th-8th Grade: Climate topics upon request

Classroom lessons are available as stand alone experiences, or as pre-lessons for spring field trips at The Arb.

Reach out to Helena.Murray@thearb.org with questions about scheduling your classroom presentation or spring field trip, or to discuss additional opportunities for your students.

As teachers are planning for spring, I want to share the exciting information that APS has provided funds to underwrite class trips to the Museum of Northern Arizona. The funds cover transportation to and from the school to MNA, as well as the cost of museum entry, a docent-led tour, and special programs.

A visit to MNA meets many of the Arizona academic standards for social studies, earth and life science, and the visual arts. Museum experiences also evoke curiosity, excitement, memorable moments, and lively discussions. At MNA, students can see the cultures of the Colorado Plateau – their own and others – represented with respect and integrity and can gain an understanding of the important interconnections between people and the natural world.

MNA offers special tours, workshops, and programs for groups of six or more, led by trained docents, many who are retired educators themselves. We work directly with each teacher to make sure the program matches your needs. Many of the programs have curriculum guides and we can provide suggestions for pre- and post-visit activities to extend the learning.
