Hello November, 2020!

Goodbye October, 2020!

With each new day comes
new intentions.  With each new intention comes new results!  I am excited for the potential our students have each and every day.  Take a moment to recognize it is indeed a NEW MONTH.  Start anew!  Thank you for bringing your best.  They deserve it.

School walk-through Nov. 18th
We have more plastic.  We can get you 32q and 90q bins for school items only.  Please let me know what you need.  Please remember to remove all items hanging from the ceiling.

FACTS is now offering tutoring for elementary students through Zoom.
The program allows parents to pick the days that they would like to attend and only pay for the session they sign up for.  The cost is $5 per session.  Each session will cap at 5 kids so they will get the attention they need.  Groups are grade specific and subject specific. They have tutoring in Math and Reading/Writing for each elementary grade.  Their plan is to continue this as long as we are doing remote learning.  Info is on our web page if you wish to pass along to families. They register through FACTs website fusd1.ce.eleyo.com.
Speaking of tutoring...I have still have $$ to pay you to tutor after school hours.  It is FREE to our families.  Just let me know!

Notes from The VOICE (Ms. Shaw)
Communications to the Board: This was a discussion coming out of another site. The policy BHC Board Communications With Staff states:

Official communication between the Board and employees will occur as follows:

A.  An employee will first communicate on school- or employment-related matters at the administrative level.  Any employee who exhausts the opportunity of discussing a matter at the various administrative levels may then communicate in writing with the Board on the matter.  No anonymous communication will be considered by the Board.

B.  Any employee who wishes to address the Board in the employee's capacity as a parent, District resident, or individual, rather than as an employee, may do so by following the procedures in Policies BEDH and BHD.

C.  Official communications, policies, directives, Board concerns, and Board action(s), as appropriate, will be communicated to employees by the Superintendent.

So as Derek states, "we still retain plenty of freedom to express concerns as citizens and residents, but if it's an employment matter, then it must go through administrative channels first."

Covid Concerns: A document outlining who to reach out to for specific Covid concerns is coming our way, be on the lookout for this information. You mail also email questions to covidhealth@fusd1.org. There is also a link on the website that identifies places that are doing Covid testing.

Bereavement: FUSD does not have a specific bereavement leave. If you need bereavement leave you would have to reach out to a liaison to take it to the committee on your behalf, and only if you have some kind of leave already banked. At one point Negotiations was looking into using donated leave for bereavement, this is being looked into and we will have a follow up on if this is a thing that can happen.

SLC Concerns: If you have any questions or concerns about what is happening at any of the save learning centers you may email Mike Vogler a mvogler@fusd1.org. If you do not know which site the student is at you can just give him the name of your student and he will be able to look up the site the student attends.

ADA Accommodations: Anyone who requested an ADA accommodation should be hearing back from the district by the end of this week (this last week of October). Requested ADA accommodations are being finalized by this date. If you have concerns about returning back to work and do not have an ADA accommodation you should start engaging with your principal about your options.

Snow days: There are talks that snow days will still be a thing. This is because we still have staff that do not have the ability to work remotely and must travel to school sites to teach, as well as students who attend the Safe Learning Centers for their education which requires travel to get to. We must take into consideration the road conditions for their safe travel to and from school sites. This has not been finalized as of the voice meeting.
Post Voice mtg: FUSD is considering transferring some weather days into remote learning days in the future. This is early in discussion, but falls in line with what 1:1 districts are doing across the country. Issues of student and staff access and equity to technology and therefore, instruction are being explored.

Spotlight on Libby Spainhower,
Paraprofessional X-Cat 3-5

I was born and raised in the Midwest and moved to Arizona after high school. I lived in the valley for many years and moved up to Flagstaff 4 years ago. I love Flagstaff. I have two amazing kids and two dogs. I'm so happy to be part of the Marshall team. I've already met so many new people and learned so many new things. I have a degree in horticulture (plants) and am also a master gardener. I also recently received my yoga teacher certification. I love traveling, photography, art, yoga, hiking and hanging out with my friends and family. In my spare time I make handcrafted bath and body products, like soap, lotion, and candles.

SHOUT OUTS  (<--you can click the green words and submit)
Please help us all see what is happening behind the scenes!

~Thank you email from a new Marshall family:

Mrs. Reasor,
I want to thank you for your devotion and extra hard work this quarter. Our family is new to Marshall (and Flagstaff), and changed school plans at the last minute. Logging on to multiple zooms a day has not been easy, but the friendly faces and patient voices of our teachers have made ALL the difference.
My younger son is in Mrs. Bianco’s class, and I
can’t say enough about her.  She takes classroom management to a whole new level with her group of sweet, squirmy 5 year olds.. and she does it every day with finesse, warmth, and somehow, a steady focus on learning, progressing, and *seeing* and meeting each kid’s needs (mine included). I’m beyond grateful for her devotion and flexibility.  She’s a dream.
My older son is a 3rd grader in Mrs. Joe’s class.  Mrs. Joe is doing so. many. things. with her students. I can imagine how fun it is to be in her classroom in-person. But what really stands out about her, is the way she connects and creates community with her students. Her students *know* her, and each other, in ways I wouldn’t expect online.  But she’s clearly the kind of teacher that prioritizes that..which is so smart, and so vital during this odd time.
We also look forward to drawing on Wednesdays with Mrs. Hobson (she’s amazing), and we’re so grateful for all the other skills our boys are learning in SEL, music, p.e. and more. THANK YOU.
Again, we’re new, and yet, my boys seem already a part of their Marshall family.  I’m admittedly scared, confused, and worn, like everyone.. but switching to Marshall has been a source of consistency and positivity, and every day this quarter, proved to be the right decision for us.

~Thank you Peggy Murray and Erin Macdonald Amazing work you have done to get operation school bell clothes and supplies to so many of our students!  Also, thank you, Peggy, for assembling many Red Ribbon activity and supply packets for Marshall students.  We are so fortunate to have you here!

~Thank you Mrs. C for morning announcements and running our Red Ribbon Week!

~Thank you Nancy Pierce for joining our CTs this week to discuss the ELA pacing guides.

Teachers,
Would you like to be involved in  Assistant Superintendent Walton's Social Studies or Science curriculum guide and resource review committee for elementary?  Please let me know!  This is a great way to be involved in creating expectations for our grade levels!

Technology Update
Technology Phishing Email- I just learned that the email you may have received on Wednesday from fusd ID asking you to change your email was part of a phishing training program that FUSD purchased to increase internet safety for our schools. The technology department will use benchmark data collected from this exercise to provide PD on internet safety and safe guards.

Restorative Practices

THE 5 R’S

(please digest 1 a week)

RESPECT

RESPONSIBILITY

REPAIR

RELATIONSHIP
REINTEGRATION

1. RESPECT:

Respect is the foundation for all restorative practices. It keeps the process safe, especially when tensions run high. Respect is developed through an appreciation and inclusion of all points of view and the practice of deep listening, where we listen fully even when we disagree with another person’s thinking.

Covid-19 Updates

I hate that this gets its own section

NEW: FUSD Covid Dashboard- https://www.fusd1.org/Page/18503

FUSD has published a visual dashboard indicating the number of positive cases by school, by week, including athletics programs. This was originally to begin once students returned at sites but will now include staff at schools without children in session. While transparency in numbers has value, it can also lead to unfounded assumptions and generalizations.

AZDHS Schools Criteria Changed to Business Criteria- The Arizona Department of Health and Safety changed the metrics for schools reopening and closing to be aligned with the Arizona business metrics. The FUSD Governing Board has made no recommendations to modify the FUSD school benchmarks at this time based on the AZDHS recs.

Here's a link to the business benchmarks if you are interested- https://www.azdhs.gov/documents/preparedness/epidemiology-disease-control/infectious-disease-epidemiology/novel-coronavirus/business-benchmarks.pdf

Here's a link to an article that explains the new recs for schools from AZDHS- https://www.abc15.com/news/state/state-leaders-in-arizona-have-quietly-changed-school-metrics-as-covid-19-cases-rise

HVAC- Continued consultation and improvements to district furnace and filtration systems was approved at the board meeting this week.

Don't forget - School Closed at 5:00 pm daily for cleaning- Please be sure to leave the school by 5:00 daily in order to allow for cleaning by SSC personnel. You are able to come into the building on the weekends. Please be sure to change your door sign to red when you leave.  Thank you.

Please take 3 minutes to watch this awesomeness!  Family engagement at its finest! Click on video below.

Teachers are amazing!

Collecting Data to better plan

The following message went out to families on Thursday, Oct 22nd.  Please remind families through your messaging too.  Thank you!

Linked in this email is a very important survey due Oct. 28th.
To assist us in our planning for return to in-person learning, we need to know each student's plan for either remaining in remote learning or returning to in-person learning once health benchmark indicators allow for our students to phase back into our building.
You will notice in the survey that we have included detailed information on the following to assist you in making your decision:

1) FUSD's plan for phasing students back in by grade level
2) FUSD's Health Metrics Dashboard
3) Marshall's Return to In-Person Learning Plan

Please review those plans carefully and submit your survey by 5pm on Wednesday, October, 28th.  Thank you for your continued partnership as we move safely forward, together.

My mom graduated from ASU, I graduated from ASU, my grandfather graduated from ASU when it was called Arizona State College, and my great great aunt graduated from it in the late 1800s when it was Arizona’s teacher Preparatory college. I received my Masters from NAU. I enjoy doing intervention and assisting students learn English.

If you are familiar with the Valley, my great grandmother is Mary Coyle of Mary Coyle’s ice cream, my cousins are the Cerreta’s from Glendale’s Cerreta chocolate factory, and my other cousins are the former owners of Pedro’s Mexican Food restaurant.

Please help us all see what is happening behind the scenes!

~Thank you Ms. Arnold, Fisher, Gerlick, Grimmett and Krause for being SO kind and patient with me as I pop back and forth to interrupt AGAIN with questions and/or more clarification about lessons, students or tech issues. I appreciate you!! Thank you!!!!! ~ Ms. Vikki

RTI CORNER

It has been a busy couple of weeks here in the RTI office!  We have set goals for students, started Progress Monitoring and we have set the schedule to continue.  Ms. Schepper and Mrs. Anderson are helping us with Progress Monitoring, which is so great!  We have also built a schedule for Schepper and Anderson for RTI, Progress Monitoring and helping with small groups.  They just started this week!

TCI Social Studies Curriculum
Mr. Kasch spoke with Christine Everett in Mary Kay's office regarding the Social Studies text website and your need for a password.  She said it was set up and ready to go for those grade levels who requested it.  Login with your email as your username, then your last name followed by 20 for the password (e.g.- Kasch20).
We know it is aligned to the old standards but hope it's a useful resource.

Restorative Practices
The restorative approach is a set of guiding principles for the school community, which sees relationships as central to learning, growth and an equitable, respectful school culture. It is a paradigm shift from traditional rule-based, punitive discipline systems. It is not a program, curriculum, or specific activity. Restorative Practices focus on building, maintaining, and when necessary, repairing relationships among all members of the school community. It is based on growth and deep learning not compliance.
These practices include: 1) Language that invites and encourages curiosity, empathy, respect, trust, honesty, compassion, accountability, inclusion, collaboration and repairing harm; and 2) Tools for community building, such as Connection Circles and Restorative Conversations; and tools for addressing conflict and challenging behavior such as Restorative Agreement Meetings, Problem Solving Circles, Restorative In-School Support Areas & Rooms, Restorative Mediation, and Community Group Conferencing.
We will continue to build our Marshall Restorative Culture throughout the 2nd quarter.  I am looking forward to building useful resources on THE HUB...soon!

Rest, relax, refresh! 2nd Quarter Strong

First quarter strong!  You did it!

We are still in Remote Learning Only.  The data will be sent by FUSD in an email every Friday. We have met two of the three benchmarks for moving into phased reopening in-person learning.  We MUST meet all three benchmarks and remain there for two consecutive weeks before we begin the phase-in model.

NEW TO ME:
IT IS RETROACTIVE!  THIS MEANS IF WE MEET THE BENCHMARKS ON FRI., THAT IS WEEK 1 BEHIND US!
The earliest staff would be required to be in the building is Oct. 26, IF we meet the benchmarks this Friday (Oct. 16th). As of today, this is not likely going to be the case, giving us yet another week but we must wait on official FRIDAY results. We continue to finalize our plans and prepare our entire building for in-person learning and how that will be communicated.

NEW TO ME:
We all received an email today that NO ONE is allowed in FUSD buildings from 5:00pm today until 8:00am on Saturday, Oct. 17th.
Maintenance and Facilities personnel will be working throughout the break and will be doing enhanced cleaning in each building. Nish knows which rooms are ready and that some of you need more time. She will make sure that nothing is ruined in your room if it is not ready.  She has been incredible!  If you see her, thank her.  Also, please don't place stuff in the hall for others to move.  Furthermore, all school team members need to leave school sites by 5:00 p.m. each day so that teams can clean the facilities. All windows need to be closed when staff leave for the day.  Thank you to those who have prepared your rooms.  We know it was a lot of work and it will save Nish a great amount of work in keeping your space clean.  Well done!!

Collaboration Hours
We have enough money to begin with up to 4 hours of collaboration time for our teachers to be paid just over $28/hr off of contract time to work on UDL lesson development.  Keep your focus narrow.  Tackle one part of the UDL design process at a time.  Please fill out THIS sheet to communicate with me your collaborative plan and don't forget to fill out a time sheet for that time period.

~Thank you Ms. Hobson from a parent: I just wanted to tell you that I am really impressed with how you are approaching your art classes via zoom...He also said that your teaching has made him even more interested in art.  Thank you SO MUCH for your hard work and positive attitude with the kids. Wishing you a lovely Autumn weekend.

Spotlight on Jolene Woody
ELL Specialist

Hi all,
I’m Jolene Woody, an EL Specialist/SEI Teacher here at the awesome Marshall School!
I have taught in FUSD for 19 years. I've taught 8 years at Leupp Public School (grades 4th-6th), a year at Killip as an SEI teacher, 7 years at Kinsey as a 4th grade teacher, 4 years at Thomas as an SEI teacher (last year as an Interventionist).
My husband and I live here in Flagstaff. Our two sons (Michael and Gabriel) live out of state. I say we’re the Lumberjack family because my sons and I got our degrees at NAU. Also my husband works there. Go Jacks! :O)
Gabriel has an aquatic turtle named, "Turtle" She is 23 years old! Yes, she grew up with my boys. My husband and I decided to keep her in Flagstaff.
I love family time such as going to concerts/shows in Vegas, NFL games in Phoenix, and see new places when we travel. I realized this during the time we stayed home from Covid-19. :ol
I am thrilled to be at Marshall School. Go Mustangs!

One more training video.  Seizure First Aid Training Video.  It is important to note that we do indeed have both teachers and students who suffer from seizures and it can be very frightening to witness.  Please take 4 min to watch this video and sign off on our form below.  Thank you.

Upon return, we will be reaching out to families with Marshall specific information on what phase-in will look like on our campus.  I will then send out a detailed survey so we can properly plan for our safe return.
You deserve a break!  I hope you find time for you and your family!
