On Friday, Marshall staff and students will be united in pink to show support and raise awareness for breast cancer. We honor those lost, we strengthen those fighting, we celebrate those surviving and we do it together. Let's unite in pink!
I do have some bad news for our Marshall community. So many of you know Xander's mom, Laura Rodriquez Hamblen. She has courageously and consistently fought breast cancer for what I believe to be 9 years! She passed on Thursday and the services will be this coming Friday morning at 10:30am at SFDA. We are happy to deliver cards or letters to the family if you wish. I know we are all so worried about Xander and I have reached out to MEMS to be sure he has support in place. You have all been so supportive of these two amazing people. Thank you.
Spotlight on Tamra Ayala
Hi there! My name is Tamra Ayala also known as Miss Tamra from FACTS. I have been with the district for 8 years but this is my first year teaching, I am beyond thrilled to be spending my first year at Marshall! It is so wonderful to see so many familiar faces and everybody has been amazing and helpful. I am originally from Juneau, Alaska and am Tlingit, which is a tribe in Southeast Alaska. In my free time I enjoy camping, hiking, being around water, and reading non-fiction (my favorite topics are true crime and Native American issues!) I also love spending time with my sweet pit bull Huxleigh. I have been amazed watching how hard everybody is working through the pandemic and all the uncertainty and how strong Marshall is as a team. I feel lucky to be a part of it!
These teachers have the highest percentages of their students actively using Dreambox. A student is considered active if they have used DreamBox for at least 15 minutes during the previous seven days. Nice work you guys!!

Return To School Updates
There is a school board meeting on Tuesday, October 6th where the return to school learning proposals will be discussed and possibly voted upon. Regardless of the outcome of this meeting (and the manner in which the board comes to their decision) we will be moving forward at Marshall in preparation for a return to school.
At this time, the proposal is for students to begin returning to school once we have met the county schools benchmark for 2 weeks in a row. Currently, the earliest return date, would be October 26th.
Here's a link to the county website- https://coconino.az.gov/2376/Dashboard-Data?fbclid=IwAR105AOsfYsOT1tQfXCNVZ5xzUFUCPM51Z52cme6RKLvt-pE_h9r9V7P2k4
On Fridays, they update the school's report which provides data and recommendations for reopening. Coconino County COVID-19 schools report released on Friday, October 2. It shows we are still in the Substantial (Red) community spread category. Positive cases (per 100,000) decreased and Percent Positivity increased.
Do NOT forget to take the survey before noon on Monday! Your voice matters!
Peak Newsletter- FUSD will be putting out their newsletter "The Peak" on Tuesday. It will contain information on health, safety, and cleaning.
Ventilation- The HVAC ventilation assessment and filter upgrades are ongoing through FUSD buildings. Please be sure to keep vents clear so our system works well. Superintendent Kuhn sent a detailed email on Thursday, October 1st. Go read it!
Spray Bottles and Rags- If you are directly servicing students, please see Nurse Liz to pick up a spray bottle with solution and a cleaning rag to clean between students. SSC will be delivering a black trash can with a red liner where we can put used rags daily. They will also have a station where we can fill up our bottles with solution as needed. Spray bottles and rags will soon be available for all classrooms.
Preparation for Deep Cleaning- as you know, All FUSD team members need to prepare work spaces to maximize space for physical distancing and to minimize any potential damage to items with the use of enhanced cleaning practices.
This includes taking each of the following steps (here again for quick reference):
Remove personal items that have fabric. This includes couches, chairs, pillows, curtains, stools, stuffed animals, and any other decorative fabric. This does not apply to vinyl products.
Move any items blocking air flow from ventilation units.
Remove or store any personal items that may be damaged by exposure to liquid. For example, photos, paintings, student artwork, posters, etc. that are not in glass frames need to be removed to ensure they are not damaged. Photos that are in frames, laminated, or plastic coverings can remain. Papers on the wall need to be laminated or in a plastic sheet protector.
Organize classrooms and common spaces to allow for the greatest amount of physical distancing space.
Maintain clear access to doors, windows, and emergency exits.
Remove all plastic/fake plants and pets or aquariums.
Remove holiday lights and open light bulb lamps.
Remove cloth covers over ceiling lights.
Maintain a clearance of 18 inches from the ceiling when storing items.
Remove decorative items on doors.
These preparations must be completed by the occupants of the work space by Monday, October 19, 2020.
Covid Documents- A black folder with the listed documents below, are ready for you to pick up from Nurse Liz along with a few gifts! It includes flow charts for the following:
- Indirect Contact Procedure
- Employee confirmed positive to COVID-19 Procedure
- Employee possible exposure to COVID-19 Procedures (Direct and Indirect Contact)

Door Hangers-
Green is clean! Please turn to red when you leave at the end of the day. When you arrive at work next, it will be green showing that it is clean. Easy Peasy!
You are making history! I am blow away by the pace and structure of this school year. I feel each week goes faster than the one before and all of the items on my "to do" list sit unfinished. Yet, these weeks are simultaneously the LONGEST weeks ever! I feel behind. I feel, at times, overwhelmed. I see that in many of you, too. You are powering through Flexible Remote Learning. You are setting high expectations and adjusting your behavior and academic plans to meet the many needs of your students. You are building relationships with students (and their parents) in an entirely new way. You are patient, you are professional, you are AMAZING! I see it everyday and I don't get a chance to tell you nearly as much as I wish. Thank you for making this quarter as successful as you can for students, parents and fellow staff members. You are on the front lines of something truly remarkable. "What are you teaching the world?" - Kid President. You are making history!!
