Where the holiday break is definitely in the past.
Where testing pressure has started to increase.
When a three-day weekend is close…..but not quite close enough.
Take time today to remember that we alone have the power to choose our good attitude.
Be the kind of person who doesn’t allow other people or circumstances to dictate how we feel or treat those around us. Instead, be the consistent one for those around you.
Be thankful for the impact that we have on not only our students but also on our peers.
Choose to be happy. Choose to be positive. Choose to smile. That doesn’t mean you are unaware of circumstances, or stress, or drama, or struggles….it just means you choose to RISE above it and be happy anyway.

From Mr. Penca:
To support the Flagstaff Unified School District’s ongoing pursuit for educational excellence and providing each of our students with rigorous learning experiences, as outlined in the Strategic Plan, teams of administrators and staff will be conducting visits during the months of February, March, and April at all schools to gather evidence in classrooms of student learning and engagement using the Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool or eleot.
The observation tool is not intended for evaluation purposes or ratings of individual teachers, but rather to measure the extent to which there is observable evidence that students are engaged in certain activities or demonstrate certain knowledge and attitudes in seven learning environments most optimal for student learning:
Equitable Learning
High Expectations
Supportive Learning
Active Learning
Progress Monitoring and Feedback
Well-Managed Learning
Digital Learning
If you would like to learn more about the items rated and scale used on the eleot Observation Tool and about each of the seven learning environments to deepen your understanding of Why These Matter and What Learners Do, a FUSD Effective Learning Environments module in Canvas has been created. Estimated time to complete this module is 15 minutes.

I appreciate the amazing efforts you provide to our students. The information gathered during these school visits will be helpful in assessing our progress and guiding our future continuous improvement efforts.
Marshall's walkthroughs are scheduled for Wednesday, February 16th from 1-3pm. The following team members will be conducting the walkthroughs. Each classroom visit is about 15-20 min. and observers will be interacting with students. Have more questions? Please contact me or Mrs. Overton.

Thank you for your professionalism during all drills. I know they are disruptive, too frequent and I'm told there has never been a school fire-related death in U.S. history (B. Kuhn~ I have not verified). Nevertheless, they are important!
Not just a drill for drill's sake: Many of you may recall a police-involved shootout in Railroad Springs neighborhood back in 2019 (very near many of our families and some staff members). A mom approached me the next morning. She was traumatize. Her family lives directly behind the incident. The shots were loud, the helicopters were loud and the anxiety was high. She brought her tired student to school because she wanted routine and she wanted to send us a message...
"Thank you for taking safety so seriously at Marshall. We stared in amazement as our son grabbed his little brother and a book. He told us all to stay calm and that we are safest in a lock down." He read to his little brother in the corner adding to calm, not the chaos. He prepared his family based on what he has learned at school. They were incredibly impressed and very thankful. So am I. Thank you. You make a difference with all you say and do!!!
Thank you, Mrs. C., for creating a video for our students in response to the brief lockdown last week.

Finally, it is my understanding that the Fire Marshal will be here this week. Here are a few items to consider as you look around your area:
- Broken ceiling tiles. If you have broken tiles in your classroom's ceiling, please let Erin or Christina know so we can create a work order to get them fixed.
- Fabric drapes and curtains. Any/all fabric covering your walls, windows, shelves must have proof of fire-proofedness attached (or in your possession) or be treated with fire-retardant spray. Tule-type netting cannot be treated with spray and must be removed IMMEDIATELY
- Evacuation maps. Your map should be affixed to the left or right of your door at eye level. You must indicate on your map your classroom's location ("You are here") and highlight your particular exit route.
- Anything (streamers, paper items, etc.) hanging from ceiling is prohibited.
- Boxes need to be at least 18" below ceiling.
- Portable heaters need to be plug directly into wall.
- Power strips cannot be daisy chained into extension cords.
- Extension cords. If a device is not plugged directly into a wall outlet it must otherwise ONLY be plugged into a working surge-protected power strip. NO EXTENSION CORDS may be used anywhere within the school building.
- Nothing can be blocking windows, hallways, or exits.

Dear Teachers - I’m excited to share that our school will be kicking off the Kids Heart Challenge program soon. We are doing a Classroom Challenge this year to encourage 100% of our students to join our online team and take the (FREE) heart healthy challenge to Be Active or Be Kind!
We need your help to kick things off! Please send the below message to your classroom parents TODAY so students can get a jump start. Also, the teacher whose class raises the most donations will receive an Amazon gift card from the American Heart Association!
Our live virtual kickoff presentation will be taking place on Monday, February 7th at 9:00am and 2:40pm via ZOOM (link listed below).

On their scheduled testing date, that grade level will NOT have RTI.
