Hello October! End Quarter 1

Congratulations to the following nominated Marshall teachers:
Meghan Mears, 2023 Coconino County Rookie Teacher of the Year!
Emily Fisher,  2023 Coconino County Teacher of the Year!
Finalists will be announced next year and the winner will be announced at the 10th annual celebratory event on April 20, 2023.

Shannon Wills is the Adult Mental Health Coordinator for Coconino County Education Service Agency. She is a social worker with experience in counseling adults with depression, anxiety, and coping with life stressors. She is excited to offer support to our staff, and would like to hear from you all about what services you would like to see on our campus.

·         Individual counseling for staff can be done during or after school time. This would be short-term (6-8 sessions), goal-oriented counseling (ex: reduce anxiety, increase coping strategies, improve communication, build resilience, etc). You could schedule an appointment to have Shannon come to school to meet with you, at an offsite office, or via Zoom during/after hours. All scheduling would be done with Shannon and would not involve school administration.

·         Group self-care activities would allow for us to host and bring in outside vendors to support mental health. We could bring in a yoga instructor, host a meditation or wellness workshop, or a free-writing/journaling session. We welcome other ideas!

·         Peer Mentor Group: This would be a way for teachers to meet as a group to discuss shared experiences and current difficulties to support one another and brainstorm solutions together. This could be via Zoom or in-person.

Counselor's Corner is in The Hub AND UPDATED - be sure to check it out!!
Included are 4 of the most used forms, explained below.
I Want to See Mrs. C - this allows students to reach out to me to let me know how they're doing or let me know they'd like to meet with me.  Feel free to share this on your class management system, too.
https://forms.gle/3KvaGEFD1STTAXD77
Counseling Referral - teachers can use this to refer students to me for Tier 2 and Tier 3 counseling needs, emotional, social and behavioral; this is NOT the B-IDM form.
Parent Permission - I imagine you won't use this often, but if you have a parent who is saying they're open to their child meeting with me individually, let's not lose momentum - send them the link and ask them to complete the form.  I will need their permission to continue to meet with their child.
2022-2023 B-IDM Referral Form - This is to be used for Marshall's Multi-Tiered System of Support.

Revisions to Policy KI - Visitors to Schools and Regulation KI-RA were approved by the Governing Board to correspond with legislation passed regarding parents of enrolled students and parents who wish to enroll their children in the school district who want to visit, tour, and observe in schools and classrooms.
Our front office staff will take care of this but I wanted you ALL to know.
  • All visitors to any school must report to the school office upon arrival and sign-in.
  • Parents of enrolled students and parents who wish to enroll their children in the school district must fill out form KI-E and obtain approval by the principal.  Keep these forms on file in your school office.
  • For those who wish to visit a classroom during the day, the visitor must contact the principal in advance to arrange a day and time for such a visit.
  • These procedures are for parents of enrolled students and parents who wish to enroll their child in the school district, not just any community members who just want to observe in classrooms.
  • Visits, tours, and observations may be discontinued if such events threaten the health and safety of students and staff.
The policy indicates these policies and procedures shall be easily accessible from the home page of each school's webpage.  I will work with Madison and Joshua to meet this requirement.
Please let me know if you have questions.

Happy birthday to Marshall!
Marshall turns 70 this year!
Do we all want to dress up????  I got my outfit.  Yes, that is it. No pressure, just thought it would be fun to coordinate.  Who is in???? Students also mentioned dressing at 70 year olds.  That works too.  Perhaps student council can help us promote it?

Parent - Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher conferences are around the corner. Dates for conferences are October 10-12. We will release at 12:25pm on all three days.  If you hold late conferences on Monday or Tuesday until 6:30pm on one of those evenings, you will be able to leave early on Wednesday for Fall Holiday. We are trying for 100% attendance. You can host families in person or on zoom. Please make sure the office gets your conference schedule the week prior.  Yes, we will be tracking and submitting to Superintendent Penca.

Form to track family participation

The Science of Reading Support

This series of videos provides suggested actions you can take right now to increase the effectiveness of your reading instruction.

Video 1: Improve the effectiveness of the daily read aloud

Video 2: Align instruction of high-frequency words to the way the brain learns to read

Video 3: Increase opportunities to practice by using decodable text

Video 4: Effectively prompt students when they are reading and spelling

Moving toward the science of reading doesn't require buying a new core program or engaging in lengthy PD. The actions in these videos represent small steps that every teacher can take to get a big improvement in reading outcomes.

DreamBox Reports provide meaningful insight on student growth, allowing educators to share progress beyond grades and inform decision-making.  This session will navigate participants to understand and use student-level reports such as the Student Overview to identify areas of individual strength and need.  Attendees will also analyze class-wide reports such as DreamBox Predictive Insights and the Class Standards Report to inform instructional planning.

Goodbye September, Hello October - School Safety

School Safety Focus

Please be sure you have reviewed the following with your students:

  • No rocks in doors.
  • No letting people in the building.
  • Lockdown procedures (the importance of location, attention to the teacher and reason for silence).
  • Shelter in place procedures (the importance of remaining safe inside of our building because something just isn't quite right outside. This will occur if there is clearing of a scene nearby or to prepare to go on lockdown if scene moves closer to Marshall).

Fiesta Bowl - Wishes for Teachers
Random draw!!!  $2,500 to 400 AZ teachers!!!

Get ready to have your wish granted!

Applications NOW OPEN through September 30

Created in 2016, the Palo Verde Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program grants classroom wishes to teachers across the state of Arizona. The Fiesta Bowl organization saw that many teachers spent their own money to enhance their classroom experience and developed a program to aid teachers in that effort. As a way to support, celebrate and honor Arizona educators, teachers are invited to fill out an online application detailing their school and classroom wish. Wishes are selected by a random drawing to receive a grant. All wish recipients become part of the Fiesta Bowl family and can participate in community events throughout the year. In its six years, Wishes for Teachers granted over $4.7 million to more than 1,200 Arizona teachers, impacting 500,000+ students across the state.
For the 2022-23 school year, Fiesta Bowl Charities will once again donate $2,500 classroom grants to 400 Arizona K-12 public and charter school teachers. Tell all your teachers to apply for financial assistance to enhance classroom resources.

APPLY HERE

Recipients will be selected at random and notified during a Palo Verde Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers Draft Day presented by SRP in early November.
Make sure you fill out your short online application now through September 30 at 5 pm PT.

Technology in your classroom
Mrs. Ayala wanted to share a couple apps she found success with, both can be used with Clever logins! They are GREAT!
https://whiteboard.fi/ is a virtual whiteboard. You can push problems out to student iPads and project their responses to the big screen as well.
https://play.rocketmath.com/ I didn't know Rocket Math was online! We used XtraMath for fluency at first and it was not a hit, Rocket Math is basically the same thing but with a better interface.
