GENERAL ELECTION INFORMATION

Early Voting has begun for the 2022 General Election ballots have arrived in the mail. I encourage you to exercise your right to vote and consider the many important local and statewide issues on the ballot.

Important Dates

  • October 12 Early Voting Begins and Ballots Mailed

  • October 28 Last Day to Request a Ballot to be Mailed

  • November 4 Last Day to Vote Early In Person

  • November 8 Election Day

Last June, the Flagstaff Unified Governing Board passed resolutions calling for special elections for District voters to consider a budget override and bond program as part of the 2022 General Election. An Information Pamphlet, published by the office of the Coconino County School Superintendent in conjunction with FUSD, has been mailed to district voters to provide factual information regarding the Override and Bond elections. More information regarding the Override and Bond is available on the FUSD website at:
    www.fusd1.org/bondandoverride.

Proposition No. 447 requests voter authorization to exceed the Maintenance and Operations Budget Limit by 15% of the revenue control limit to fund existing programs which challenge and prepare students for success for a period of seven years. Overrides in Arizona must be renewed every five years, or they begin a two-year phase down with complete elimination after the seventh year if not renewed. The existing override is scheduled to begin a phase down in the 2024-2025 year unless renewed by voters.

This override supports the District’s efforts to help maintain and enhance present levels of service:

  • Ensuring compliance with State mandates

  • Maintaining current class sizes

  • Full-day Kindergarten (currently funded by State for ½ day)

  • Art, Music, and Physical Education in elementary schools

  • Extra-curricular programs

  • Gifted Education, Advance Placement, International Baccalaureate, and STEM programs

  • Maintaining all current programs and services to the extent possible

The estimated secondary tax rate needed to fund the full override is approximately equal to the existing secondary tax rate for the current override. Since this is a continuation of the current override, property owners will not experience an additional tax increase because of the override.

Proposition No. 448 requests voter authorization for the Flagstaff Unified School District to issue general obligation bonds in principal amount not to exceed $100 million to provide funds for the following purposes:

  • Constructing school buildings

  • Renovating school buildings

  • Purchasing pupil transportation vehicles

  • Acquiring by purchase or lease school lots

  • Improving school grounds, including adjacent ways thereto

  • Supplying school buildings with furniture, equipment and technology

  • Liquidating indebtedness incurred for the purposes set forth herein

  • Providing all utilities and other capital items necessary for the construction and renovation of school buildings and for improving school grounds

  • Paying all architectural, design, engineering, project and construction management and other costs incurred in connection with the purposes set forth above

  • Paying all legal, financial and other costs in connection with issuance of the bonds

The estimated secondary tax rate needed to fund the $100 million bond program is an increase of 35 cents per $100,000 of net assessed valuation per month from the current rate.

Please share this information with others (family, colleagues, neighbors) and direct others to FUSD website at www.fusd1.org/bondandoverride for more information about the Override and Bond.

Halloween 70's style!
Celebrating our 70's is optional
Marshall's 3-Pronged Policy -----E   (get it?)
1.  Any Halloween activities must be aligned with standards and instruction.

2.  Aligned Halloween activities must not impact or interrupt other school programs, schedules, or special classes, including but not limited to RTI.

3.  Costumes must be school appropriate following the guidelines below.  If your students wish to come in costume, please make sure you pass along and monitor these guidelines.
  • If costumes are in any way unsafe students will be required to remove them.
    • No attire may be worn which would in any way impede the student from moving safely and quickly out of the building in the event of an alarm.
    • If students do not have a change of clothing, they will be required to stay in the office until parents arrive.
  • Costumes must not obstruct vision or movement or in any way present a hazard to the student or other classmates.
    • Masks may not be worn.  Not even outside the classroom.
  • No fake knives, swords, or guns of any kind may be used as a part of any costume.
    • Such items will be confiscated and may result in disciplinary action including but not limited to suspension from school.
  • Costumes must not be overly gruesome and overtly violent.
Also, please keep in mind: many of our constituents find the celebration of Halloween to be offensive, contrary to their religious beliefs, or just a distraction from what should otherwise be a normal, productive day of school.  In planning to incorporate Halloween into your teaching next week, should you choose to do so, please recognize and honor each individual's position on this issue and their right to hold it.  You may not choose to exclude from instruction students who choose not to recognize Halloween.  Please keep in mind: a separate-but-equal instructional program for such students is most often neither.
Thank you for you help in enforcing the "Halloween 3-Pronged Policy".  Please share your educational ideas and photos with the rest of us.
