Attendance Matters
YOU matter more than you may realize
While my knowledge is based on information available up to September 2021, I can provide a general overview of the importance of teachers in the classroom and the effects of their absence on elementary-level students. Recent studies and reports have consistently emphasized the crucial role teachers play in shaping students' academic and socio-emotional development. A 2023 report by the National Center for Education Statistics highlighted that teacher-student interactions significantly impact student learning outcomes. Teacher absence, even for short periods, can disrupt the learning environment, hinder academic progress, and lead to increased behavioral issues among elementary students. A 2022 article in the Journal of Educational Psychology emphasized the critical nature of teacher presence and quality instruction in maintaining students' engagement and motivation, particularly in the foundational years of education. It's clear that teachers are fundamental to fostering a positive and effective learning environment for young learners.
That said, I hold a deep appreciation for the hard work and dedication of teachers, recognizing the vital role they play in our student's education and overall development. It's crucial for me to acknowledge that teachers, like everyone else, require personal leave at times, and your ability to maintain professionalism while ensuring students are set up for success in your absence is commendable! I had to address a situation with a high number of teacher absences these last two weeks, and it reinforced my belief in the resilience and adaptability of educators. The way you manage your classrooms, provide substitute teachers with guidance, and prepare students for continuity in your absence is a testament to your commitment to the well-being and academic growth of your students. I firmly believe that teachers are the backbone of our educational system, and your dedication to fostering a positive learning environment, even during challenging times, is truly praiseworthy. Thank you for planning for your absence(s) well in advance to assure we are all set up for success.
The Special Area teachers want to thank everyone for being so flexible with changing the schedule. We appreciate your flexibility!

Birthday Treats and Healthy Snacks Reminder:
Our district and state both regulate the snacks and treats that are allowed in schools. With this said, Marshall does have a policy that only healthy snacks should be brought in for birthdays or daytime nourishment. Please communicate to your families that birthday treats can include fruit, cheese sticks, yogurt, goldfish, and any other healthy snack you can dream up.
As for daily snacks...candy, large chip bags, soda, and energy drinks are all not allowed. If you see these items at lunch or in the classroom, please follow through with upholding this expectation.

Emails and Phone calls
In an effort to re-establish some work/life boundaries for myself (and hopefully for our staff), I will be sending and responding to texts and emails between the hours of 7:30- 5:00 Monday - Friday. My hope is that this will free you up from feeling like you need to check your email to see if I've responded to you and it will free me up from checking my email during down time.
That said, if you need to get a hold of me outside of these hours for something important, please text me on my cell 928-699-8613 and I will be sure to get back to you. I gently encourage you to consider adopting a similar practice if you find yourself checking and responding to emails in the evenings and on the weekends ;)
