October Opportunities are EVERYWHERE!

At Marshall, we truly believe in high expectations for EVERY student at EVERY minute.  
I know how hard our jobs are!  I also know how important we are to the well-being of all we encounter throughout our day.  It has never been more important to treat each other and each student with respect, care, and genuine understanding of who they are.  Please take a minute to view this video.  Do we really understand the power we have?  Do we really know the impact we have when we interact? I believe we underestimate our collective influence.  We have the ability to move mountains with our Mustangs. 

Mr. Penca has asked me to sign an attestation for the items below.  

 
I know we have evidence with announcements M, W, F. Please make sure you are saying the pledge and honoring the Mustang Moment on T, Th as well.  Thank you all for being in compliance. 

U.S. Flag Display
  • A United States flag shall be displayed in each classroom and on or near the outside of the school building during school hours.  Classrooms are defined as any room students may occupy when the Pledge of Allegiance is recited at the beginning of the school day.  It is recommended that U.S. flags also be displayed in common areas (gym, library, auditorium, etc.)
  • The flags must be manufactured in the United States, be at least 2x3 feet, and use appropriate hardware.
  • Other flags should be approximately equal size or smaller than the U.S. flag.
  • No other flag or pennant should be placed above, or if on the same level, to the right of the U.S. Flag (the flag's own right).  When flying two flags on the same staff, the U.S. flag should always be on top. 
  • A specific time is set aside each day for students who wish to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights
  • For grades 7-12, a legible copy of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights shall be placed adjacent to (next to) each classroom flag.
Period of Silence
  • A period of silence shall be observed at the beginning of each day that lasts for at least one minute, but not more than two minutes.
Declaration of Independence
  • Each student in grades 4-6 shall recite the following passage from the Declaration of Independence at the commencement of the first class of the school day:  We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.  


Technology Standards Clarification


With the adoption of new Technology Standards by the Arizona Department of Education, FUSD has been working on changes to the Elementary Standards Report Cards, with updates to the Synergy Grade Book still being configured.  As such, the following should be noted:

  • 2023-2024 will be a phased implementation of the newly adopted Arizona Technology Standards in FUSD with full implementation expected in the 2024-2025 school year.
  • The Quarter 1 elementary standards report cards will list the seven new AZ Technology Standards within two categories, shown below, with X's pre-populated for each standard in Q1, indicating that these standards have not yet been assessed.

·         Technology Standards should begin being assessed in Quarter 2, continuing through Q3 and Q4.

·         As Digital Citizenship is required to be taught to each FUSD student in grades K-12 this should be considered as a starting point when assessing this standard category on the report card.

·         In the next few weeks all seven of the new AZ Technology Standards will be loaded into the FUSD Synergy Grade Book for reporting to the Matrix and Report Card for Quarters 2, 3, & 4. 

·         For purposes of instruction and assessment the two technology standard categories are defined as:

o    Digital Innovation (Standards 1& 3-7) - the application and adoption of digital technology in a strategic manner to enhance and/or improve student learning in order to reflect technology’s increased role in the learning and lives of students.

o    Digital Citizenship (Standard 2) - the student's recognition of the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal, and ethical.  

o    Please check Frontline for professional learning opportunities on the integration of the new AZ Technology Standards.

Mall Points        

Marshall will be participating in the Flagstaff Mall Elevate My School program to earn points towards a monetary award for our school (not MCSO). Please bring ORIGINAL receipts to the Marshall office for ANY purchase made at the Flagstaff Mall September 29th through December 31st. Receipts must be turned into Marshall within 30 days of purchase.

New employee handbook via our Frontline System was sent to all employees. You have until October 20 to review the information and sign-off on reviewing it.  


Parent/Teacher Conferences 

12:45pm Early Release 

Please remember to provide us with your 

conference schedule at the front office so we are ready for our families.  Once again, I will be reporting your conference percentages to Mr. Penca using this form.  It is always preferred to have in-person conferences but teams or zoom can be another option. With your zoom account now being the free one, the meeting will only last for thirty minutes so teams is preferred for video conferencing. As a last resort, phone calls will also count but please try all other options first. You guys always rock these important opportunities to partner with our families! If you have a conference after 4pm, please meet your families at the front door. 


A few more items: 

K-3 teachers: Move on When Reading Letters will be on your desk by Monday morning. Please discuss these with your families and do your best to direct them towards what we are doing for their students. We know the word "Dyslexia" that appears throughout the letter is overwhelming, but with proper communication, hopefully parents will have a better understanding. If you have already had a conference for a student who is receiving a letter, please call and talk to their parents about it before sending it home. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. 
All: We will have GDMs and IDMs the week of October 16. If you want to discuss a student, please be sure you have completed either a Behavior IDM form or Academic IDM form by Monday, October 16. That way Jenn and Heather can be ready to discuss your students at the time of your meeting. 

Finally, there are multiple doors left open throughout the school. We need all employees to be sure to keep doors closed and locked. 


We are very appreciative of the professionalism and partnership we have with our awesome bus drivers here at Marshall. We partner on behavior issues, and they even want to dress up for our spirit days. I just wanted to give a shout out to Mr. Zach, Mr. Steve, Mr. David, and Mr. Gary.  Our bus evacuation drill was thorough and swift. 


















Spelling Bee!!
Who is ready for our annual spelling bee? The time is here! Please see the timeline below and let Alianah Ramirez know if you are in! 
  • Let her know if your class will be participating by Monday, October 16th 
  • Give your participants the classroom spelling bee study list (you will receive this from her)
  • Complete classroom spelling bee and email her the winners (1st and 2nd place) by Monday, November 13th
  • Give your classroom winner and runner up the school spelling bee study list (you will also receive this from her)
  • School wide spelling bee - Friday, December 8th 
  • County spelling bee - Saturday, February 3rd
All grade levels are invited to participate!

Elementary Mathematics Professional Learning Opportunities


October 24 180 Days of Number Sense Routines for Building Mathematical Discourse and Student Agency

4:15-5:45 Family Resource Center, Literacy B

This session is a practical introduction to bringing more powerful and equitable math talk into your classrooms while building numeracy by using 5-10 minutes number sense routines. Participants will receive 180 days of grade specific slides to guide the routines. This course is restricted to certified teachers of mathematics for grades K-5.

October 17 and 26 Addition and Subtraction within 100 Parts 1 and 2 - Constructing Numeracy

In the 2-part session we will dive into the concepts behind and strategies for learning to add and subtract within 100. The focus will be on mental strategies. 3 hours of Salary Advancement or CSF (301) hours


November 8 and 15 Fraction Concepts Parts 1 and 2 - Constructing Numeracy
